Raising Gamma/Brightness an Exploit?

Recommended Posts

So, increasing your gamma and brightness so you can see at night, is this an exploit? I believe it is, as night is pitch black, if you walk outside, with no light, it is going to be pitch black (Depending on the moon, which this game factors in). I for one have left my gamma and brightness at it's default setting, to get a more authentic night-time feel. Perhaps this puts me at a disadvantage, but I'd much rather have a true night.

Discuss.

It's exploitative, but I won't call it an exploit because that implies I care and think anything can be done about it.

You might as well do it. When I raise my gamma and brightness, it seems more like an authentic night. I still can hardly see my gun in front of me. I dont think they could ever stop people doing this. Disabling these sliders would be bad.

It isn't as effective as it used to be no more so..

It's exploitative in nature, but disabling it would be a very bad idea. What if your monitor is naturally darker than another person's?

I am in no way saying remove the option to change brightness, I'm merely speculating.

No its not. For best night experience raise them both to max and have health below 4k so your vision is black and white. Talk about feeling 24 hour daytime ;)

Think this was related to raising brightness and gamma outside the game, mainly NVIDIA Cards could be set in a way where they would have a big advantage over people who didnt have access to that gamma* boost.

Dont think using ingame settings is an exploit in any way.

Now in my opinion that is how it should be. You'd be at an inherent disadvantage at night, resulting in the inability to see. That is why we have glowsticks/flares and NVGs

I haven't turned mine up at all, they're both at 1 (their default value) and I'm still able to navigate perfectly fine using the illumination from the moon. The week of the New Moon phase is always going to be tough, but the rest of the month is usually fine. Even combat is relatively easy, as muzzle flashes reveal enemy positions easily enough.

i dunno i feel like it is engough of a disadvantage playing with your shit turned up u dont see that well some one with nvg's can still see 200 times better.

yah you dont get to see morons running around with flares and glow sticks as much but, i don't think anyone wants to play in the pitch black and no one wants to be target practice with a flare at night so people either find servers that are day time to play on or they just don't play at night time and i dont think people should not be able to play on there favorite servers just because its night time.

It is an exploit, but it would be hard to do enything about it. I usually stay away from nighttime because it seems like most people do this, and I don't want to do it myself. It makes a very uneven battleground.

I do however understand why people do it.

I have to turn mine up, my monitor always has some sort of brightness issue even with it's settings maxed. I even have to use the nvidida settings to increase brightness naturally outside of programs.

I don't consider it an exploit because it doesn't give anyone an unfair advantage. Every player can do the same thing.

I also consider it a necessity to play at nighttime, because ARMA doesn't simulate human eyes adjusting to the dark. Go outside in real life at midnight, go away from streetlights for 30 minutes, and you'll be able to see well enough to navigate, especially if the moon is out. On the other hand, join a DayZ server at 0100 and sit there and stare at the screen for half an hour, and it's still too dark to see. If the moon isn't out, forget about seeing anything, even if you raise gamma.

It's also crucial to remember that every player's system and environment is different. Some people may play in a dark room, but others may play in a lit room. Some may have brighter monitors. Some may be visually impaired. Every player must be free to make adjustments to suit his needs.

In the end, even at 0100 with gamma turned up to 2, you're still at a serious visibility disadvantage compared to daylight. Zombies can't see you, but it's harder to see them, and you probably won't spot other survivors at a distance. I think it's balanced enough.

I don't consider it an exploit, you have been provided the option to do it and like Junos said, everyone can do it so you don't have any advantages over other players.
