Disabling "Player was killed" message and murder count.

Recommended Posts

This is probably a simple fix that could be made.

Firstly, I think the server message detracts from the uncertainty of killing someone.

If you shot somebody, you wouldn't wait for a message, you would have to keep your gun on them until you know that you're in the clear to loot them. This would also add to situations when you hear a gunshot, but don't know your friend has been killed.

Secondly, the murder count in the debug monitor. I don't see a purpose for it, of course the murders of somebody should be tracked so the "heartbeat" system can still work, but I don't see reason for it being in the debug monitor - if anything it gets used as a scoreboard to see how many people somebody can kill.

Both aren't essential to the game and it would probably be a slight improvement if they were removed.

I would probably go further as to say that the debug monitor should be removed all together; the only important aspect of it is the blood count, and this could be transferred to just the blood icon. With it changing colour as you lose blood (Green to blood red, as it already is) and flashing when you're bleeding. The monitor isn't needed for anything, apart from the testing phase of new updates and even then only the devs need to use it.

Agreed,

Except I do like the blood being in numbers. Maybe a % on the blood drop will do?

If this were a full game or even a RC beta id agree with you, however since its still in alpha i would guess that mostly the devs need it. but i dont belive its possible to show the debug monitor to certain people, therefore its shown to everyone, for now atleast.

some very good points tho...

i'm keen for this, though as stated above, i'm pretty sure the debug monitor is alpha specific. i do agree it would be better not seeing "soandso was murdered

Server admins can disable the kill message but the kill count in the debug monitor can serve the same purpose. I'm sure eventually it will be removed, but I guess the devs feel that there is value to letting regular players see it in an alpha version.

I'm fairly certain though that the devs could enable the debug monitor when they are testing new patches and then disable it when they release the new .pbo's. It's probably just a boolean like ShowDebug.False/True
