Its kinda the same idea has canteens for water, you are at water, but you dont have a canteen so you will die instead of drinking straight from the pond.

I'm not going to die from starvation if i have a can of food but no can opener.

I do think when eating cans you should be left with empty cans,

No need for can openers when nowadays most of the cans have this little clip to open them.
