Ramblin Hans 118 Posted July 27, 2012 I have a question regarding the use / storage of the hatchet. Pretty much the first thing one gets, it seems so far to me to continue to have a use even after you find a gun. Its ability to kill without attracting attention, effectively unlimited uses, and it doesn't run out of ammo when you're cornered ;)I understand how to take it off the tool belt and use it in my main slot etc. My issue is when I find a rifle, I put it on the belt and take the rifle. But now I can't use it anymore. That might be ok if I also find ammo for the rifle, but even so it seems one would want to swap out in certain scenarios. Is this possible? I lost two nice AR's last night trying to find a way to put the gun in my pack and use the slot for my hatchet. The gun seemed to disappear when I tried to move it to my pack. I took to just leaving a couple AK's on the ground...it did me no good to be defenseless if I couldn't find any clips first. Is there a way to store you main slot weapon while you take you hatchet for some choppy-choppy? felix_kruettner@web.de 5 Posted July 27, 2012 You can store your weapon BUT be aware that it will take 10 slots in your backpack and if the required 10 slots are not available some random stuff will be deleted. oh and the ammunition will automatically be put in your backpack as well
SnakeEyes (DayZ) 4 Posted July 27, 2012 primary weapons such as the AR's you lost require 10 backpack slots. if you don't have them available the weapon "disappears" for good when you try and place it in the pack. once you find a bigger pack you can keep 10 slots free in order to store your primary and use the hatchet. i've started only carrying a pistol so i can use the hatchet as a primary until i'm able to find a better pack. i can take out an entire town of zeds quietly with the hatchet. after a few shots from most of the in game guns you will start to get overrun and in trouble. not to mention other players hear the gunfire and come running... Bludy 324 Posted July 27, 2012 all the thing is a little bugged/glitched..so if you put a primary from slot to pack it may disappear, and the same if you put it down on the floor..it could actually go underground and unreachable, you can try before placing something else on the floor and see what happens. it's also common that if you take one of your primaies in the backpack it can be disappeared once you re-log in. and pay attention to the number of slots in your back pack and in inventory for ammo clips. a primary weapon takes ten slots and if you try to put it where tere isn't room, it could dissappear. so axe is a real choice if you want to continue with it
SnakeEyes (DayZ) 4 Posted July 27, 2012 IMO the hatchet is the best PvE weapon in the game...
Ramblin Hans 118 Posted July 27, 2012 Ah excellent, thanks guys. So the newb coyote pack is only 8 slots if I recall, hence why I had an issue. good to know it is at least possible. i've started only carrying a pistol so i can use the hatchet as a primary until i'm able to find a better pack. i can take out an entire town of zeds quietly with the hatchet. after a few shots from most of the in game guns you will start to get overrun and in trouble. not to mention other players hear the gunfire and come running...Exactly, I can actually clear zombies to scavenge with it rather than belly crawl around for a half hour to just find empty tin cans in the shed. And the few pistols I've found don't seem to have the stopping power + limited ammo to get me out of jams the way the axe does.

MrBrown (DayZ) 26 Posted July 27, 2012 Does anybody know if Rocket would like to make it possible to just put your shotgun/assault rifle on your back - like your character already does when you switch from the gun to the flashlight for example? Or to phrase the question differently: Is the current limitation a technical or an intentional one? I hope it's just a technical one which could possibly be resolved. I see no reason to handle the hatchet differently than the flashlight.

electro.pedros@gmail.com 2 Posted July 27, 2012 I LOVE HATCHET!!!!Once you've figured out how to use it properly you are going to become invincible in PvEI was able to take out an horde of about 20 zombies running after me-without going inside a building-barelly moving (quick hint moving make your aiming much harder :P and if you dont kill on the first blow you are going to get a lots of damageSecond hint, there is a pattern on how every actions a zombie must follow before being able to try landing the first blow. It is about 1 sec and this is during that particular timing that you could clear any horde of zombie without taking much more then 1 or 2 punchesHatchet Brother & Sister are going to get some bicycle and go help any noob trying to get away from the largest group of zombie!
Element47 2480 Posted July 27, 2012 yay, another opportunity to further my agenda and advocate more melee weapons in the game! :)the hatchet is awesome - imagine if we had lumberjacks axes, cleavers and fence poles.. *sigh*
electro.pedros@gmail.com 2 Posted July 27, 2012 Lets schedule some hatchet fight club tournament!!!Free zombies to do practice!!Free hatchet since no one else Ive met seems to care about it!!!
BryceAroni 2 Posted July 27, 2012 everytime I try and use the hatchet against zombies they always end up swiping me more than a couple times. A lot of the time when they catch up to me, they are within swiping distance and Im not within hacking distance. Perhaps Im using it wrong`.
electro.pedros@gmail.com 2 Posted July 27, 2012 If you wanna hit where you are aiming you must be standing still for at least a secondPay attention to the two circle that are moving while you moveAnd there is something REALLY big that you are missing right now :PKeep testing itNext time you'll re spawn and you end up with only an hatchet try to lure one or two zombie in a warehouse and test itIm telling you, what you are missing is so bigIt is really rare any zombies are able to hit meI'm pretty sure you are doing the exact same thing others people does Little hint to you, I'm pretty sure even if you see it from your eyes, due to the distance which is too close your hatchet is going through the other side of the zombies....The animation is not the deadly part of your hatchet it is the exact timing where it is reaching is max distance
HMS 115 Posted July 27, 2012 Pedro, I was just about to post about this.I was having a lot of hatchet problems last night. It was my first time with the hatchet. Playing with a buddy who had it, it seemed foolproof. But, I got killed EASILY by 2 walkers and I couldn't take them out for some reason. Then I respawned and managed to find one quickly, and since it was night time, I hacked about 30 of them to bits because I could sneak up on them. But if I mistakenly aggravated one or two, they would still get several swipes in before I landed my hits.I think there was some lag between my +attack and the actual swing, but even then... something was wrong. If you can offer any other tips, I'd appreciate it. electro.pedros@gmail.com 2 Posted July 27, 2012 you wanna know my opinion about that? Its might look like a bug but... seriously in real life you have an axe trying to kill someone who is able to feel your breath in his neckWhat is he going to do?He is going to prevent you from swinging the axeEvery melee weapon in life got a certain amount of range where they are effectiveAn axe got a range that, like in all zombies movies, the kick ass melee character will keep his distance to 1. not getting biten and 2. be able to swing his axe at will.....First thing Ive done before actually trying to kill a real zombie is to find a dead one then try to hit the body from the longest distance possibleOnce I've found that I know my timing is at X distancePass that distance you are dead meatIf you hit too soon you are so because they are going to rush at you right afterI wont reveal the patern zombies are using before attacking when they go from sprinting to melee because once you were able to figure that out you are basically zombies proof :PThe only hint I'm going to give you about that pattern is that its doing the exact same thing to you if you try to sprint to a zombie and try to attack it
HMS 115 Posted July 27, 2012 Thanks - yes I've seen that. My mistakes early on were 1) Swinging from too far away and 2) In a panic, not realizing that you can't sprint and swing... sounds obvious but under adrenaline, things happen.I know the exact behavior you mention. You would think if you rushed at them, surprising THEM, they would just attack right then and there. I am sure that will be refined down the road.Good times.
