I was searching a body and i needed to switch from my M24 to my AKM in order to clear a building. I did by dropping my AKM out of my ALICE pack and trying to pick it back up after dropping my M24. When I did that, my AKM disappeared...and then I tried to find my M24...that too, had disappeared. What the hell happened?

The game is in alpha, be careful about dropping anything. Should have just switched the guns from inv to backpack, didn't need to drop them. You didn't lose anything special, you'll be fine :)

Dont drop them near each other and dont swap out on the floor in a building. If i am doing something like this i will go outside, find a nice clear piece of ground with no grass, drop my weapon..step back and make sure it is there on the ground with the ammo. Then swap my other weapon from backpack to on hand, then go back and pick up my first dropped weaopn and chuck it in my backpack. Havent had it go bad yet :)

Items can fall through the floor of buildings and on slopes, avoid dropping items there where possible. I always carry an empty whiskey bottle, for distracting zombies or to get them to leave a building, I drop that first and then check if I can pick it back up. If I can, I just drop the items in the same loot pile.

You guys do realize you don't have to drop weapons if you want to switch them out form your backpack to inventory...Takes a long time, leaving you exposed.

You have primary in hand, and primary in your pack you want to switch into your hand. All you need to do is take the weapon from your pack and MOVE it into your "inventory". The weapons will automatically switch as well as your ammo will move accordingly. Just make sure to never do it the other way around. Putting a weapon INTO a full/almost full backpack will result in it disappearing.
