chris_heyward 47 Posted July 26, 2012 I did post this on the Update Patch thread but believe it belongs here.I am constantly seeing comments regarding the ALT+F4 problem. The way I see it, there is a simple way to fix it. I'm not sure how other MMO's do this but Eve-Online gets round this with an "Aggression Timer". When you are being aggressed by the NPC's, you can log out but if a player takes a shot at you, you either sit there if scrambled or you get off-grid and sit there for the 15 minute aggression timer giving players time to scan out your location and kill you.I would suggest DayZ goes along the same principal. If a player fires a weapon in your vicinity and you ALT+F4 or abort, you should either sit in that EXACT same spot for 30 seconds or your character disappears but sits in a Zed-free area for roughly 15 minutes within say 0.5 km from your log-off spot. If the ALT+F4'er logs back in, He goes back to the original place he logged out at making it easy for you to keep a guy there watching while you scout out his log-off location.
drseptapus 49 Posted July 26, 2012 Why don't we just have a clean disconnect option? You clean disconnect by going to the menu and disconnecting. You then proceed to sit down for X amount of time and then log out. If you ALT+F4 out, you get some kind of penalty. I am assuming there is a way to identify an ALT+F4 vs a disconnect error. I am assuming there is a way to identify an ALT+F4 vs a disconnect error.A clean disconnect (abort) sends a signal to the server letting it know you have DC'd. An ALT+F4 doesn't send any signal and its up to the server to realise you are no longer there. In other games such as Eve-Online, I have ended the .exe process (as ALT+F4 is disabled) on my alt characters and it has taken up to 2 minutes to realise I was no longer there before it logged me out. Putting a delay like that into DayZ WILL stop the ALT+F4 cheaters but it will also screw over the legitimate people with connection issues so rocket cant really win this one. He either stops the cheaters and pisses off the people with net issues or he helps the people with net issues thus getting more ALT+F4 cheaters.
Pappy (DayZ) 0 Posted July 29, 2012 (edited) THIS THIS THIS!This game needs to keep the penalty high for disconnecting while in a bad situation. I love everything about this mod, the only thing that concerns me is the complaints about how hard the game is...If a delay was implemented on log out(no mater if its clean or an ALT-F4) then that forces the player to find a suitable place to set up camp. This is a survival game, you should have to at least get yourself out of harms way before you disconnect. Also, the delay would force you to wait to join a new server once you disconnect.
