Tents: how do they work?

Recommended Posts

How do tents work? Are they bound to servers specifically?

Consider the following:

if I make a tent on Dallas 5 during the day, store items in it, and log off, will I be able to retrieve my items when I log onto Virginia 22 the following night?

If not, what is the point of tents?

They're stored on each server. You need to play on the same server(s) to take advantage of tents.

A good idea would be to gather multiple tents and spread them out across a few servers all in the same spot. You can essentially move items from one tent on one server to another tent on another server by logging out after grabbing things and putting them into your inventory (since your character inventory isn't per server). Takes a few extra steps but still works the same as having one tent for all servers, you'll just need to find multiple tents.

And if one camp on one server is compromised, you won't lose everything since you've established a camp on other servers in the same spot as well. Though it would be best to make your camp on inconsistent servers, ie: one on Dallas 11, and another on Virginia 1 or something. As opposed to one on US1 and another on US2. Because if someone found your camp and it was large, they might server hop to similar servers to see if you set up camp in the same location on those other servers as well, if they were really determined. But the risk of that is low (no one is going to bother searching other servers for your camp if you only have one tent), and if you hide your camp well enough, odds are no one will find your camp in the first place.

But either way, it's a good idea to spread your camp across multiple servers.

So in other words, if you find a tent on one server, loot it and then change servers to see if there are other tents in the same place on other servers :D

Generally if you find a larger camp, or maybe a smaller camp with a lot of good items, it may be a group who sets stuff up across multiple servers since relying on one server to never be down or lagging isn't too good of an idea. But unless they made camps in servers right next door (Dallas 1, Dallas 2, Dallas 3, etc), it's likely you won't find their other camps just by randomly choosing different servers to join. And even if the group played in only certain server areas, that doesn't mean they couldn't hold a primary base on some server over seas, simply for storage purposes, and vice versa.

So, I wouldn't bother server hopping for extended camps unless the camp was massive, you were bored, and/or had a lot of time to join a lot of servers to check haha.

And of course, well organized groups could anticipate this (or SHOULD anticipate this) and build camps across servers at different but nearby locations and just keep track of all the coordinates. But I'd say just inconsistent servers would be enough to deter anyone from wanting to server hop if they find your camp. Odds are they'll quickly run through your tents, then get the hell out for fear of being spotted and shot (since those would be hot spots for groups to come back to camp).

On that note, for bandits (or rather, the soon-to-be simply murderers), if you find a large camp and have a lot of patience, you might be able to pick off a lot of people coming back to their home base, and THEN loot it all. If the camp was far enough inland, taking the whole group out might give you enough time to relocate the whole camp and keep all the goodies. But that doesn't mean you've killed everyone who knows of that camp. And they might alert more to come later, or have someone keep watch until they've all respawned and returned. So, it's high risk either way, but if you're just looking for quick kill counts, then there you go. The temperature system might make camping a bit more difficult though, so if you really wanted to pull it off, I think the best chance would be joining a high/full pop server during peak times and watching the camp then.

Anyway, enough about giving bandits ideas for killing people lol. In the end, tents are great.

(note: I am not a bandit nor have I killed any survivors [though I should have as I've been murdered by more survivors than bandits], just getting some ideas out there to make for some interesting gameplay!)

edit: Additionally (just thought of this), you can find a large camp that's still in use but only take one or two things, and more or less let some other group collect shit for you, and simply use their camp when they aren't there. Not storing your own items in there, but rather using their camp as a means of rearming, getting ammo, grenades, food, etc.

If they don't know it's been found, they'll keep using it. So as long as you don't give too great of a clue you've been stealing from them, you can essentially have strangers working for you. But again, the more you return to the same camp that isn't yours, the more you risk being found and shot, and then they'll relocate the whole camp, and you'll have to start from step 1 again.
