This is tecnhnically not true since you can set up all or some games to not update automatically > right click > properties > Updates > keep this program up to date. If that is off then people wont get forced updates.

Only works for the current session. That option will reset itself when Steam is started again.

The game doesn't finish the update until you run the game from steam without -beta launch options. If you've done a lot of manual updates you need to run reverify game cache of Arma 2 then run the game. Then you need to do the same for Arrowhead.

I don't even use steam to run OA and DayZ, I just go straight through Six Updater... But the Steam update still messed with the files. Lots of forum posts about it, I just made it clearer and more noticeable. Just don't risk it.
