[Q] Can we lock our server for testing?

Recommended Posts

Me and some friends are renting a server at VIlayer.

But we've got some problems regarding the RCON control panel, and we see that everytime anyone loggs on. And we are restarting the server almost each 5 minutes to implement the changes(since we are kind of noobs at Arma 2 servers).

So, we are afraid our server gets blacklisted. So, to avoid this problem can we lock the server for a day or 2 and then reset it's data base for us to at least figure out how can we work on it?

What we don't want is people reporting us for restarting the server every minutes thinking we are doing something ilegal or wrong when in fact only one guy is loggin and testing and figuring out how all the stuff works, but it seems like people wan't to join our server anyway!!!! =(

So, if we lock it out will there be any problem?

Or, if so, can we at least do something for the server not to appear on the list until we really stop testing??

Thanks a lot in advance.

=)

What you will encounter are automatic measures set in place by ViLayer that will shutdown your server after a minute or two of being locked. Locked servers aren't allowed and server hosting companies will shutdown servers that go into a locked state.

He is correct, the tough stance on locking servers is most likely going to stay for a while. It's the downside to this whole hive scenario.

A good move is to use your Rcon to send a message letting players know your shutting down the server

Rcon ===> "-1 GTFO_Server_is_going_down_in_5_minutes" something along those lines. People tend to take it personally when a server goes down unannounced, make sure you and most of your clan is out of the game and hasn't died recently to dodge the 'admin abuse' threads. I usually give a 10 and 5 minute warning, anyone who logs in past the 5 minutes isn't going to lose a lot of progress if it doesn't save.

If your super stressed about it, put in your MTOD that the server will be restarting frequently. Vilayer has a pretty user friendly interface for that, I think it's in the server config section.

If you want something a little more technical, PM the guys from Vilayer.

@Graz

Really thank you, man, for the reply.

I already did this and "shutdowned" the server for now, until we know a little more about it.

We are now testing at private(lan) Arma2 servers, but soon enough it will be very late(1:35 night BRT), so I think the server will remain stopped 'till tomorrow.

You think Vilayer or anybody else will complaint about it?

Since the server was stopped I think there isn't any problem.

And, one more thing, I can't PM Vilayer myself, I'm not the official guy who rented the server. He doesn't speak english, so we have to manage how to communicate with this little big problem.

But, thanks for both of you who answered. =)

Locking server exploiting is mainly for loot farming, using vehicles to get around unopposed and to a small degree ghosting.

None of this can be done when you stop your server. Vilayer seems to be very fair, so I would just explain the situation if anything comes of it. However I doubt they will have problems with you turning your server off for a time while you get your bearings

Really thanks, man.

I will contact them asap.

As I said it's not for farming or anything like this, it's just that we don't want to offer to the player that come to our server a bad first impression. So they can come here and stay for as long as they want.
