Effective use of junk

Recommended Posts

I'm sure this has probably been said before, but i'm saying it again.

I suggest that the game NEVER spawns junk like empty whisky bottles and crushed coke cans, and instead, once a player consumed a can of beans, they would then have to remove the empty container from their inventory and THROW IT ON THE GROUND!

It makes the junk not only more authentic, but if it de spawned after say, 30 minuits, it works as a footprint to show that someone has been there recently. The empty cans would simply be crushed if they were left there 0-15 mins ago, and 16-30 mins would make them rusty.

They could also change the description in your inventory to show the state of the can, including "this is a can that you have disgarded" "this can is fairly old, who ever left it has probably moved off" or "this can is empty, but still fresh. whoever used it may still be nearby."

How about junk just be taken out entirely? They serve no purpose other than to break glass and be an annoyance to players that have to pick it all up and move it just to make better stuff spawn later.

Remove junk.

As i said, the junk is not a spawn item, it is something left by players and if this idea were to take place it should in no way effect loot spawns, meaning that theres no reason to remove it, especially since it will serve as a footprint

Current uses of trash is distracting zombies/players and breaking the hospital glass.

But why would you remove it, or make it not spawn?

It's only realistic to find piles of trash lying everywhere, even if not thrown away by an actual player.

There are prop military soldiers in military outposts, damnit.

But I do agree, drinking cans of soda and eating food should leave an empty can behind.

because it would be no fun if you could not tell the difference between player dropped junk or randomly spawned junk. the only way we could effectively have both spawn in litter and player litter is to change the item descriptions given in the inventory, so that you could tell the difference.

This is a WONDERFUL idea! :D

I always loved how the grass got flattened when a survivor crawls across it, I've found a patient that way who was passed out under a tree and didn't know exactly where they were. This would really add a wonderful element of tracking to the game, thank you for taking the time to write it up and share it with us!

People who have been playing the game for about a week have most likely learned where "natural" spawns for items are in most hotspots. I doubt that players would find a normal loot pile to hide their trash in to avoid leaving a "footprint." But if they do, that's also a tactic. If I was being chased in a terrain that would give away my path, I would either step on hard ground or find other footprints to walk on, or even walk backwards! (To confuse the chasing party.)

And yes, changing item names would be fine.

Like "Empty Soda Can" and "Empty Tin Can" are natural spawns, while "Used Soda Can" and "Used Tin Can" are from players.

DayZ mythbusters prettymuch confirmed you can throw cans to kill a zombie, so junk isn't invaluable... i personally also rather find junk than finding an empty spawn place, as it signifies whether somebody passed the location recently and looted it (or not)...

I do think some items need to also be usefull, i am not sure if the OP is looking to improve their idea above by adding a couple more to it, but i'll give the ideas anyways:

- empty whisky bottle: make it into a molotov

- empty tin can, use it to boil water to sterilize it for drinking, or to boil 'rags' in to make them into bandages, or to make soup in by boiling water with meat.

- If food cans could actually hold a different quantity than sodacans, these soda cans could also be used to boil water in. They are not big enough for the other things though...

And i would propose more 'junk' items to spawn in general, but if possible have these being 'story' junk items, notes/postcards/etc. that way there is more presure on the loot tables making them spawn usefull stuff less often, making the game harder in return...

it would be great if the tin can could be used for like a boobytrap only thing you need is like some kind of wire and attach it to a grenade and put that in a can and when a player touches the wire the grenade wil pop out and explode :D :emptycan:

no use for trash?, i beg to differ

it's possable to kill a zombie with trash, it only takes 3 cans to kill a zombie, so... just run indoors and your free to go zip some metal in their faces
