FearTheMuffin 1 Posted May 22, 2012 UPDATE: The issue seems to be when you use "30 round G36 SD" magazines with the m16/m4 rifles. See post #3!I recently found a multiplayer "mission" that was a firing range. You can set the distance, type of target (red target or human) and even have a bullet cam to see where the rounds hit. While playing around with the different weapons I realized that the M16 and M4 iron sights seem WAY off with elevation. The versions with scopes seem ok.The rifles seem to have a 25/300 meter zero, which I've also heard mentioned by others. I never really cared about these rifles in DayZ until I recently came upon a lot of magazines that made it worthwhile to take. With the M4 at 100 meters you need to aim at the knees to hit about COM or shoulders, at 200 meters you need to aim at THE FEET to hit about the same.I'm fairly new to m16/m4 rifles (currently building an AR-15), but a 300 meters zero should put the bullet at about 5 inches high at right aroun 150 meters (m855, 20" rifle)I'm assuming this is the same for DayZ, but it would be nice to know for sure. I just found an M4a1 and haven't had time to try some longer range shooting with it, but I figured this would be good to talk about so other people know if this is an issue.TL;DR: The M16/M4 sight elevation seems WAY off. This is an M4A1 at 100 meters:[attachment=305][attachment=306]
zanderflex 1 Posted May 22, 2012 Hey there, you seem to have found a pretty neat bug! Apparently when you use SD ammo with iron sighted weapons, or holo sights, the zeros become way off! but this same issue does not affect scoped weapons, with or without suppressor. I have never noticed this before but mostly because I don't load with SD ammo unless I actually have a suppressor. However due to ammo scavenging this is a totally real bug in dayz and will affect game play.
FearTheMuffin 1 Posted May 22, 2012 Hmmm, I never thought about it using SD ammo. On the map those are the only magazines they give you for the m16/m4 rifles.Taking the SD ammo into account, you should have to aim HIGHER than normal magazines due to lower velocities.EDIT: So I figured I'd take a closer look. It appears that in the crate with the assault rifles and PDWs they only have "30 round G36 SD" magazines. THESE are the magazines that shoot high. I found regular Stanag magazines in a crate with sniper rifles and these shoot correctly, just a few inches high at 100 and 200 meters. They don't give any Stanag SD magazines to use so I couldn't try the zero with that. I'll have to try it in game and report back.
sarlac 10 Posted May 22, 2012 This is troubling news...
-=Grunt=- (DayZ) 0 Posted May 22, 2012 Problem with STANAG SDs or any other SD ammo in general is that the default zeroing of the for example, M4A1 is at 300 meters. If you shoot a target at 100 meters, the bullet is going to hit higher than the iron sight. There seems to be no way to lower the zeroing of the M4A1's and some other guns' iron sights in the game. This can be fixed by simple mods out there but I'm not sure if they'll include it into DayZ sometime.
sarlac 10 Posted May 22, 2012 I get how the ballistics should work. What seems off is the degree of adjustment needed. And with sd ammo which I assume is intended to simulate subsonic rounds, you should see more drop due to lower velocity. The OP makes it sound like its backward or something. I'll be testing this myself when I get home in the morning.
-=Grunt=- (DayZ) 0 Posted May 22, 2012 Nah, it does indeed have a decrease in velocity BUT!It makes zeroing below 300 meters actually take effect... Like for example:Standard STANAG mag - Aim at a target 50 meters away with your iron sight zeroed to 300 meters - Bullet hits perfectly without having to lower the zeroing of the sights.STANAG SD mag - Aim at a target 50 meters away with your iron sight zeroed to 300 meters - Bullet hits above the iron sight beside it's only 50 meters away and you're zeroed to 300 meters. It's strange I know... But yeah, SD bullets in this game go on a "curve" (VSS Vintorez-like) instead of the more-straighter-line-out-of-the-gun of normal bullets.
FearTheMuffin 1 Posted May 22, 2012 Guys, read post 3 to see more info. The magazines it was giving me were "30 round G36 SD" magazines and there was NO issue with standard stanag mags. I was not able to try the "stanag SD" magazines yet but will as soon as I can play more. All bullets are on a curve in ArmA2. Once I was able to use the stanag magazines the ballistics seemed to very closely mimic the m855 5.56mm round with a 300 meter zero. With a 300 meter zero the bullet crosses the line of sight at 25 meters, goes to a max height of about 6" and then drops down to the line of sight again at 300 meters. It would be nice to be able to adjust the sights like you can scopes, seeing as the A2 sight is awesome for that, but it probably won't happen. If anyone wants to try this out for themselves, the map can be found at the link below. You have to play it as a multiplayer mission, but you can just set up a LAN server by clicking "new". Look through all the crates to find the right type of magazine.http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=14616
FearTheMuffin 1 Posted May 23, 2012 I was only able to test the Stanag SD magazines at night time, but they seem to hit high also. I'll be playing this weekend and figure out more when there's daylight.
FearTheMuffin 1 Posted May 25, 2012 I test the stanag SD magazines during the day with the m4a1 and I did have to aim low. I was aiming at the zeds feet at about 100 - 150 meters and it hit just about shoulder height.
colosseum 2 Posted May 25, 2012 You're using weapons that were made for ArmA2. They're zeroed for 300m by default. When Operation Arrowhead came out, BI added some more features to weapons, such as the ability to zero some of them. The AR-15 platform came in with A2, not OA. Therefore you will not be able to zero them in-game, as far as I know.
FearTheMuffin 1 Posted May 25, 2012 Oh, I know. I'm just saying it would be nice seeing as the silenced ammo has a different point-of-impact from the standard ammo. The whole reason I wanted to make this thread was to make people aware that the SD ammo out of non-scoped rifles has a different trajectory.
