Cannibalism - the practice of eating the flesh of your own kind

I think this would be an excellent addition the game. It IS an apocalyptic wasteland. Food gets scarcer and scarcer. You might have to resort to something you think is disgusting, fowl, just plain wrong, and against all of your morals. But its for survival! You wont be hungry! Your blood will go back up! You wont have to suffer without food for the day!

However, eating a person could have repercussions. You can catch disease. It can cause you to go insane if you can't stop eating your own kind.

Pros ~

Blood Increase

No longer hungry

Basically it will act as food

You would need a knife

Cons ~

A 5% chance to catch disease. Which will be cured by antibiotics.

After many cannibalistic acts (lets say... 5) you have a small chance to be insane. Very small. 1%. But after you eat another piece of human flesh (making 6) your chance increases to 3%. With each consumption of human flesh at and after 5 you have a chance to catch insanity. With every consumption after 5 your percent to catch insanity goes up by 2%.

Insanity ~ This will be a temporary insanity. Last for a short time(15 secs) rather than 100% of the time.

Blurred Vision

Very heavy breathing/growling

Uncontrolable shaking

Lost control of your character for a short amount of time (I know this would be extremely hard to implement but I thought it would be awesome)

Random laughter

Once you've contracted insanity you have a random chance to become temporarily insane every 2 minutes. Your chance would be low at the beginning. 1% every 2 minutes. But if you ate human flesh while insane again your percentage would go up by 5%.

Lets say the temporary insanity last a bit longer than 15 secs. Maybe 5 minutes. You could put off the insanity by eating more flesh. Sort of like an addiction. You now need it to function properly.

Skins ~

You could also change skins but this would be a small minute change. When you are insane your mouth/face is covered by blood. If you are not insane but have ate human flesh before your eye color could change to red or maybe just a small blood smear on your clothes.

EDIT: This topic has been suggested before. I just looked, my bad. However in my defense, those topics are eh. No offense to the creators. Its more or less "Lets eat people" and thats the original post.

you should need a hunting knife or something to do the cannibal thing. it would be hard to eat someone without tools to cut them open and get you started.

Then are we no better than the zombies themselves?

i like this idea i been thinking of it too

we often hear it happen to survivers and dayz has the grounds for it you are in a world theres no food and the only proteien you can get is from the people you kill

there is alot of things that can be done and if you know your way arround the editor you can build a mission file and ad the needed scripts for the action to take place and then simply host the mission

That's a nicely structured idea you got there. Although, I think the chance to get insane and/or sick should be higher. Another suggestion, if you killed a player by shooting him, it would "infect" the body, so you wouldn't be able to eat him? Also, if the meat was cooked, the chances of getting sick/insane would drop :)

I am warming to the idea of cannibalism in the game , though it should be a relatively risky thing to do , more of a last resort and prolonging the inevitable , than a long term strategy .

Ill eat pumpkins and other vegetation first and for ever before chewing on your rotting dead bodies

Works as a last resort, when you can't find anything.

Exactly, it should only be a last resort sort of thing, that being the reason why the chances to get sick/insane should be way higher, making the players think twice before nomming on a dead body. It should also be restricted by the way the player died, and what his conditions were before his said death (you wouldn't be able to eat a player who died from sickness or infection)

The real question is, is how many inventory spaces does a survivor take up

Instead of 5% chance of getting ill and needing antibiotics a 50% chance would work.

i believe its dayz+ or dayz 2017 that uses this mechanic minus insanity

There is. In the 2017 mode at least. If you find a dead human/zombie you can gut them/eat their flesh. Needing a hunting knife of course.

Cannibalism is something usually done out of desperation but we know players will simply use it as another reason to kill a player or get a few extra points to their blood.

Cannibalism needs to have a heavy penalty like getting a disease

Example:

"Kuru is an incurable degenerative neurological disorder (brain disease) that was probably transmitted among members of the Fore tribe of Papua New Guinea via cannibalism. Kuru is a Fore word that means 'to shake' People with Kuru tremble and shake"

http://en.wikipedia....iki/Cannibalism

"Kuru is an incurable degenerative neurological disorder that is a type of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy, caused by a prion found in humans.[1] The term "kuru" derives from the Fore word "kuria/guria" ("to shake"),[2] a reference to the body tremors that are a classic symptom of the disease; it is also known among the Fore as the laughing sickness due to the pathologic bursts of laughter people would display when afflicted with the disease. It is now widely accepted that Kuru was transmitted among members of the Fore tribe of Papua New Guinea via cannibalism.[3]"

So if DayZ had Cannibalism there could a virus meter/number count of pathogen. When this numbers get to a certain count you start to get Kuru, which you can't cure. the shakes would be every so many minutes but heating human flesh to many times = constant tremors.

This means players would only do this- only when they are actually starving.

My guess would be, you wouldn't take the whole survivor with you, of course xD It would be just like you do with cows and such, you must have a hunting knife, and you would take pieces of meat, which you would then have to cook

Instead of 5% chance of getting ill and needing antibiotics a 50% chance would work.

Well, maybe it should be even higher than 50% *-* If it doesn't have a high penalty, it will only work as another excuse for players to kill each other, and it should only work as an act of desperation and starvation

This idea is over exaggerated. Seriously, we could feed on fruits and berries, instead of eating human flesh.

Cannibalism only serves a point of desperation for your own hunger. I can disagree with this because eating your own kind's flesh doesn't serve any nutritional value and would only get you sick. Going further into details would be pointless.

There is a way of countering prions irl, although it is next to impossible in the DayZ universe. (unless an entrepreneur orders one of these http://www.avure.com...0-july-2007.pdf and sets up a cannibal restaurant).

Exposing hot dogs containing a paste of scrapie prion-infected brain tissue to temperatures of 120-135 degrees Celsius (250-275 degrees Fahrenheit) and short bursts of ultra high pressure, in excess of 100,000 psi retains the basic texture and flavor of the processed meat while reducing the prions to non-infective levels. http://www.nih.gov/n...03/ninds-05.htm

This process would destroy the flavor of other cuts of meat (which might be good in a way).
