New player - I just had my first hostile PvP encounter.

Recommended Posts

I finally bought Arma 2 yesterday from the Steam sale and I spent most of today running around in Dayz.

I took a little break and then went back on later and - wow! DayZ nights are Dark! It impossible to spot loot without your flashlight. You can barely see anything!

I've been hearing how hostile players are in DayZ - that most shoot you on sight. I was pleased to see that in the first couple of hours playing DayZ, I had 3 pretty good human interactions.

The first followed me around a bit, and then took off, the second was running down a hill I was at the bottom of and, when he spotted me, turned around and ran back up it. The third came into a hanger I was looting, let me finish, took a look at what was left, then followed me around for 5 minutes before running off somewhere.

I made an observation, though. None of these players had any gear. They didn't even have any weapons.

While I was coming out of a building I had just looted, I saw a flash a little bit off (It was really bright in the pitch-black) and I dropped to the ground. This decked out guy with a ghille suit and a huge rifle runs by me (didn't see me - I was right under him) and runs into the building I just came out of. I get up, and run around the back to get a better look at him. As I step into the back entrance, I just see a flash at the end of the hallway, and I go down.

So, I guess I'm just wondering, is it usually the more decked-out players that are more hostile? Because they want to protect their gear? I was having pleasant interactions with all of the just-spawned survivors, but the first decked-out player I met put me down the second I walked through the door.

I guess I know now to not follow experienced players. I should have just walked away. They'll just put me down and not even bother looking through the gear I spent all day gathering.

It's a great mod, though. I'm not even mad that hours of gear were just wiped out in a split second. I'll just get it all back tomorrow!

That's pretty much right. If they have a gun, they'll shoot you and steal your :beans: .

After a while it becomes a drag and you haven't even got too the hackers yet, it gets worse.

I personally hate to shoot everyone I see, but I'm more scared of them putting a round into me if they have a weapon. I either walk away or put them down.

That's what I figured.

I guess that I'm a little disappointed. I thought that maybe all of the "everybody is hostile" talk was over exaggeration, but it doesn't bolster the resolve to see that my fist encounter with an armed player, and he put me down without a second thought.

Oh well, back to DayZ...

I always do as followed, I just use voice chat via direct com and if they don't answer me back in voice or chat, then I put em down or try and get away, depends on the scenario.

i am one of the full equipped players and i have to say. when i see someone with a gun, he realizes by looking at me that he def. can get some nice items out of me. so what option is there left for me? when have the chance to use voice com without giving away my location i try it. but mostly i shoot on sight when they are too close. if i can evade players i do it. but if it gets close. they or me are done for.

Yeah, I guess that I get that. You spend all that time getting gear and surviving, if someone is loitering around you with a gun and not responding, put him down.

This guy was just being a jerk, though. I was about 30 feet away with only a hatchet out. I couldn't even see him. It was just complete darkness and then a flash from one of the corners in the hallway.

Oh well, it's an online game, I'm gona get people like that...

Most players without weapons will be friendly, and that´s cause they don´t have any means to kill you.

I was in Balota airfield today and helped two guys deal with their zed problem in the hangars, both of them had axes but didn´t tried to kill me, once all zombies were dead i took off to the tower and found a G17 leaving my Makarov on the floor. Suddenly one of the guys show up at the tower and grabs my Makarov, he them immediatly tries to kill me but i managed to kill him first, the second guy comes up and just chopped my face up with the axe while i was bandaging myself.

I even recorded the whole thing and posted on Youtube, but since the video is in portuguese which is my first language i won´t post here =D

I wonder if he had nvg's though, sounds like no seeing as he ran over you not long before. When he spots you with a hatchet following him..course your going down :) You may have been 30 feet away when he spotted you, and you are not going to get him from that distance but what was your plan ? Were you going to hatchet him or ..? He has to think you are, he was probably thinking...thank fuk i saw you when you were still out of range.

Your going to get killed a lot sneaking around behind people :D I will observe, try comms, only kill if they are close and i feel i will be found, especially someone creeping around behind me with a hatchet.

Honestly? I should have just gone prone right outside the door, because I just wanted to see if he would drop any gear for the stuff that was inside. Maybe he would have dropped something good for a few bandages.

I just wanted to get pickings on whatever he left behind.

And, I think that he did have nvg's, though because I still have no idea how he saw me coming through the door. There was a zombie chasing him - maybe he ran past me the first time just trying to get away from the zed?

People who are unknown to you and vice versa will always be hostile. You need to become known to someone or else you're just competition for food and ammo.

Anyone who's survived long enough to get the gear understands that they are too valuable a target to trust someone who is also currently fighting to survive.

Thus the old saying, never trust someone who has nothing, for they don't fear losing it and any small gain is an infinitude more than they have.
