Physiology of Zombie Vision (For 1.5.8).

Recommended Posts

So yeah. Here's another physiological idea.

Okay. You know how zombies are all pale grey? That probably means their skin is ischaemic - which means, without blood flow. That thing probably happened to their eyes.

Eyes are super sensitive to even a minor ischaemia. If blood vessels feeding your retina go dry/break, you're major f*cked. You go blind and your eyes start rotting. While gruesome for a human, I guess that the zombies wouldn't mind.

However, as tempting as the idea of zombies being blind might be, I'd like to see something a bit different. I'd like to see that the zombies got blind for red light. Lets just say that the red cones in their eyes died out, so that they can't see RED light.

What that means. If you go night looting while carrying a red glowstick or military flashlight, they'd not be able to see you. Thus making the military flashlight and red glowsticks a MUST HAVE HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER items. Possibly even more rare.

(Road flares are a different thing - they make hissing noise.)

And in general, I'd much rather prefer zombies orienting themselves mostly by sound. Auditory organs are pretty robust, I'd guess that they'd work on the undead too. But not the eyes. That's just wrong.

So, hopefully the devs will like the idea. Could add a tactical element - otherwise, I guess that the night will now be downright impossible to play IF you don't have NVGs.

Oh, and it might be fun to up the spec map on the zombie eyes. So, when you shine a light on them in the night, that they glow an eerie glow.

Peace, love and death to the bandits! ;)
