Is humanity permanent?

Hello folks, after being killed by survivors several times I decided to become a bandit and to be honest I've been really enjoying it.

One thing I noticed though is that if I get killed my negative humanity remains as it was before. Is this supposed to happen? I thought that dieing meant starting over with a completely new character, but it appears this only affects your gear.

with 1.5.8 it wont matter though, no more bandit skin

You can reverse it doing good deeds. but come 1.5.8 i will be doing killking without considering humanity as you wont be able to tell who is a killer.

Oh god its going to make my banditry so much more rewarding, most survivor groups look at my skin and nope it all the way back where they came.

with no bandit skin i'm gonna be able to infiltrate groups and collect my trophies much easier

Be careful: they're deliberately keeping humanity in the game. There's no telling what they'll do with it or when, or even if they'll get around to it at all, but it's pretty obvious that they intend for it to serve some purpose in the future.
