What are these boxs?

Howdy, I come to you with a question.

I heard a gunshot, followed the sound and saw zombies layed out all facing the same direction, I assumed some guy mowed them down while leaving the town so I followed the direction the zombies were going when they died. After 2 mins of just finding constant stray zombies I found this:

Inside was 2 water bottles. I thought the box itself was a bit odd but didn't think much of it. I took the bottles, drank them then put them back in the box just to let the owner know I had been there.

Continuing my little stalking session I heard a gunshot. I went to it and didn't hear anything else, essentially the trail went cold. I just went to elektro, see if there are any friendlies and I heard a heap of loud booms. I got down and heard more booms. They weren't being shot at me, but near me.

I went to them and the booms stopped. The booms lead me to this little box:

It was filled to the brim with M107 ammunition, it would explain the booms, a bit panicked I just GTFO'd.

I've played for 2 months straight and haven't seen these ever. Not entirely sure what they are.

tl;dr: What the hell are these boxs?

I think they're ammo boxes, maybe hacked into the game. Not sure though.

Hacked ammo boxes. They can contain whatever items the owner wants them to. I have seen ones filled with every gun in the entire game and with plenty of ammo.

Its weird that they are a different color from the usual ammo boxes though, but still hacked ammo boxes.

Hacked Ammo Boxes.

Normal Ammo boxes look like M249 Mags standing up on their side. My clan and I call them VHS tapes.

Hacked Ammo for sure, Hacker was probably using an M107 to kill random people elecktro.
