Many more working vehicles

Recommended Posts

There is little reason to have so few working vehicles in the game. Remember the lineups of working vehicles on the highways in "The Walking Dead"? If people got infected, they would be simply abandoning them.

Also, it should be possible to siphon gas from these vehicles. Remember, there is no electricity and therefore gas pumps would not work.

I think the number of vehicles is limited purely as a gameplay mechanic.

There are times when 'realism' need to be limited to create a fun and authentic experience.

I agree 100%, Vehicles are tough to fix up, they will be lost by ambushes, crashes, people shooting at you and there very noisy and noticeable. Make them more common so at least players and groups feel like they have a chance and meeting up will be a little quicker, all while risking the inevitable of losing your vehicle all the time.

Vehicles would be great, but if the current scavenger system was worked on more, fixing up a wreck and getting it going is part of the fun. Should be able to craft more though to make barricades and stuff like that.

Well you must consider the fact that this is not necessarily the same North American metropolis that the Walking Dead, (or any Zombie flick I've seen recently in the main media,) happens to take place.

The 225 km2 area Arma 2 and DayZ is centered around, is actually based upon the lesser-populated Eastern part of the Czech Republic. If you think about it, this land wouldn't necessarily be full of Fords, Chevy's, and consumerists. In fact, the population of this area, (if this were reality,) wouldn't be much over 150,000 inhabitants. So take that math, apply it to the fact that, IF there was a Zombie infection in an area of 150,000, and there's often about 2000 Zombies on the map, with an even smaller amount of survivors, (let's say 50 depending on the server,) the odds are that most of the other survivors took their vehicles, (if they could afford them,) and took right off in to the mainlands, leaving only the junky vehicles behind to be torn apart by Zombies and scavanged Bandits alike.

Vehicles as they are are great. They're special. Anyone can have a vehicle if they care to work at it, or if they get lucky and steal one.

If you're smart you don't drive your vehicle into town. You park a ways out so that no one hears the engine and you move in on foot. Sometimes you just get unlucky and your ride will get jacked. Too bad.

If vehicles were all over the place we'd have morons careening from one end of the map to the next, running people down just because they can, and vehicles wouldn't be nearly as cool and awesome as they are now.

Thats true, but adding a few working cars (3 or 4) per server would be cool though.

I know what your saying.. but Chernaurus all together can easily have a population of 150,000+ without counting visiting family, people on vacation, business related visits etc..

Also consider the Debug Monitor doesnt exist. (Its not supposed to be there, its literally for testing reasons, hence DEBUG). The world is supposed to be simulating 150,000+ zombies. Not 1,000, not 2,000... Zombies in debug are literally telling you how many zombies are currently spawned. If you didnt notice.. a town you were once in, once you leave that town, the zombies DESPAWN. If there was 150,000 zombies spawned at a time. That server would overload, and so would your computer.

I totally agree to the first 2 paragraphs 100%, but your blowing this out of proportion by saying vehicles will be EVERYWHERE. Im saying lets make them common enough that at least 1 vehicle can be fixable in each town (No, NOT GUARANTEED, so there can be 5 vehicles in 1 town and 0 in 4 others).

The average lifetime is 28 minutes. Yesterday it took 2 hours to meet up with 2 of my buddies with no compass on a FULL server during daylight. By the end of our sessions, one of our guys died. We could all be dead if nightfall didnt come around. We may never see a vehicle just by complete chance. Yes we can eventually be more stable but with all the variables, bugs, server crashes/restarts, locations being lost and the already low probability chance of you even SEEING a vehicle. Vehicles mightest well be out of the game..

Even the countryside of the Czech Republic has more vehicles around than I've seen here. This isn't some backward, Soviet-era territory....

What fun would it be if there were ton of already working vehicles around and everyone had one?

Keep the rare broken vehicles as they are. It's actually exciting to find a broken car and then have to repair it with your group, it's rewarding

Having working cars everywhere would defeat that

Having more full fledged vehicles would make things unbalanced. However a bicycle could work. Too many cars would make the game unbalanced, but a bicycle isn't as fast, and would have to keep to roads, they are too slow on dirt.

If we're talking about faster transportation that is both balanced in gameplay, and realistic, a bicycle would be the closest. People couldn't run you down with one, because they're much more vulnerable in a bike. Ultimately people would be sacrificing self preservation for transportation speed.

Also they could be more common, because lots of people own bikes, not alot would think about them during an infection/apocalypse

A secondary idea to that, is that as a protection for your bike, you could use the current vehicle construction system that's in place to take off your front tire (maybe require toolbox?), essentially protecting your bike from thieves.
