It is likely not at all connected to the Day Z official hive servers, so any progress gained there will be limited to there. Once the character in a non-hive server is separate from the official servers you can't loot for example the NW Airfield in empty servers. As long as there is no punishment or something else restricting server hopping on normal servers, I myself at least keep on playing on non-hive servers.
