DayZ is a free mod but you need to pay for Arma 2 and Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead to make it work

No. DayZ is free. ArmA 2 Operations Arrowhead and ArmA 2 are not.

DayZ is not a stand-alone game. It is a mod for the Arma 2 engine. So what you need to do is buy Arma 2 Combined Operations which is $25 on steam right now. I have also heard it is on sale at Amazon for only $20.

You can buy it on disk or as a download. Keep in mind DayZ may not be for you. It is a brutal game and part of its purpose is to piss you off. You will die alot and you will lose your stuff over and over. I love it but it is a complex game at times.
