After updating to 1.7.2.2 and joining DE servers (im from US) I spawned with a new character without actually choosing a gender on the beach. This character persisted to any server I joined. I was able to run to Electro, find a gun, and traded kills with a local (we both died). After I logged into another server, I was back at Stary with all of my gear (guns, gps, etc) from my previous still alive character.Best of Luck!
