Thinking of Hosting - Some Questions

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm thinking of hosting a server (or getting a server hosted, that is) and was wondering about a few things. A couple buddies and I play every now and then. We love the game with people but would it be possible if we locked the server for a few hours or so to play and mess around? (Fix up a car, a heli, find other stuff we haven't already? You know, experience more as some hoarders usually run all the stuff up the hills...)

Not for ever, but just a few hours every now and then?

How long does it last for our server to appear with the rest on the Six Launcher after the set up?

What Admin powers do you get when you run the server? (As in what settings can you control and what not?) Would I be able to clear things saved up outside the map area and in the hills in case people are camping up there?

Thanks in advance! :)

In summary;

Locking, no locking at all. Locking and looting will get you black listed. That said some servers (ours) auto lock for 5 mins prior to our automated 6hourly restart.

Out of bounds clear up, nope its done at hive / db sporadically by the dev team.

Admin powers. You can alter time, you can kick / ban but only for specific things. You can not kick to make way for clan members.

The only other thing to bare in mind is that becoming an admin will, in the eyes of most people here place you in the social level of pond scum, you will be accused of everything from nuking your own server to creating save points for "your" loot. You will be a turd on the shoe of many butt hurt children.

I think that's covered it.

Being an admin is great! Everyone hates/blames you for EVERY problem they have on there server!

Someone steals a groups car? Well apparently it was me hacking! They take it back and the server restarts? I guess that was me too! It's interesting to see what I'm blamed for when I get on my server for the first time that day. :)

Wow that sucks...

If the server is blacklisted, does that mean you can no longer run DayZ? Or just from the Six Launcher? Was hoping to just have a play through with just my buddies and I for once.

What I was hoping for was maybe out of 24 hours online, at the most 4 hours would be locked. I mean if I'm paying for the server... cant I play and enjoy my time every now and then?

If the server is blacklisted it won't be able to connect to the hive, and therefore, useless. You will still be able to run DayZ as normal and play in other servers though.

Absolutely, being an admin is an ungrateful job. You only spend and earn nothing, except hate and accusations...

The problem with allowing servers to be locked is that you can bring the items collected to other servers. And is therefore an easy expoitable by server owners.

As a server hoster / admin you get the short end of the stick really.

My friends and I host a server because we were tired of having other servers disappear (blacklisted, renamed or the person paying for the server not keeping up with the payments), or just run badly with lots of downtime, admin abuse and what not.

Things to know:

DayZ servers aren't cheap, I believe the going rate is €1 per slot with a current minimum of 40 slots. The hardware required to host is high end and unless it absolutely meets DayZ dev expectations will be rejected.

DayZ servers are not completely reliable due to the Alpha nature of DayZ. Even with the best host in the world there WILL be issues.

People blame admins for everything. Dying, lag, bugs, crashes, global warming...

The only abuse an admin can really do is 1) lock the server (sure way to get blacklisted, goodbye Hive) and 2) kick / ban for no reason. Sure you can restart all the time but that just means the admin / friends can't play too. Some admins do restart however to dupe things. This will be fixed in the future fingers crossed.

At the end of the day you get a lot of crap - whining - flaming...

But the result is you get your own "home" in DayZ for you and your friends that you know won't just disappear suddenly one day, taking away all of your tents and vehicles too.

On the flip side, you also provide a resource to DayZ and it's a pretty awesome feeling when I log on and see lots of names (who aren't my friends) but I recognise as they have made our server home too :)

Best thing is you announce server restart 15 minutes in advance and post a countdown reminder every 5 minutes and a last message right before you restart and still people go "You shouldn't just restart a server, the countdown is too short"

Yeah when you join right before I restart <_<

But I take it with a grain of salt. So far I've got way more positive feedback than negative :)

Guess why it's not allowed.... Locking a server to become a hoarder yourself?

Wow way to accuse me of something I was against from the start of my thread...

Sorry I was just interested in trying to fix up a car one day in the game.... jeez... I guess wanting to experience more of the game is bad? So much negativity in this forum... even from the staff itself. Wow.
