Those looking for heavy immersion

Recommended Posts

..and have a good deal of patience.

People coming from an arma background probably know all about Trackir.

Those new to arma probably do not.

As you know the arma engine allows the avatars head to move independently from its body, meaning you can look in a different direction to which you are moving.

Head tracking basically means that you move your head (irl) and your avatars head corresponds ingame.

Trackir is a system which uses IR to do this, but there is a cheaper alternative (which doesnt work as well but is free)

All you need is a webcam and some time to tweak things.

http://facetracknoir.sourceforge.net/home/default.htm

Examples:

If you've got some time and a webcam give it a go. (Id suggest installing the beta version which is 1.6)

I usually just eat beans and drink coke while playing on a treadmill for a deeper sense of immersion. The thing is my experience is even more immersive because you actually vomit after eating a tin of Stagg chilli after five hours of mixed running.

My homo bromo MR DELIGHTFUL has this though, he lectures us constantly on the merits of trackir.

The only problem is that when his girlfriend tries to talk to him he looks like he has a spinal injury.

Yeah I use facetracknoir with a ps3 eye for all my flight sims (DCS/BMS/FC2) but I personaly don't use it for infantry but for vehicles it is great.

Lol.

I feel that the "alt" button works just as good, not to mention it's a lot cheaper. I keep frantically trying to hit the very same button each time i dip into other shooters.

There is also an open source program called "freetrack" available, for wich you need as little as a webcam, some LEDs and a tiny bit of technical knowledge (they have tutorials). I assume its probably a bit more accurate and faster than this variant.

I use it sometimes, works like a charm.

I have a TrackIR5 which I use without fail in ArmA.

Because of the DayZ gameplay I find it difficult when the Zs are at me so I am not using it, I much prefer to use the free look key.

But that's just me.

Hahaha!

Yeah I tend to use tracking while in the wilderness. Have a shortcut to pause it when in town.

Track IR is best used for flight sims (Il-2 1942 etc where you gotta be aware of the surroundings non-stop). Alt key / numpads work great in arma. Imo track ir will just make it unnecessarily complicated.

I definitely wouldn't buy trackIR just to have my characters head move left and right. I find the alt button is sufficient, and I have never equated more immersion to my characters head movement.

Now, if 3d headsets were less costly, I would invest in that. Im not talking about glasses, Im talking about the good, expensive headsets.

So like... Im looking at my monitor... I look to the right...my character looks right?

But then I'm looking at a half empty mug of tea and the half painted miniatures on my desk and not the screen?

Crouch down, look directly down at the ground. Hold alt, look directly up to the sky. Delight as your friends poop in their tactical pants. Thrash the mouse about like some killer mutant sandworm to great effect.

Alternatively, prone on the ground, look straight up, hit a roll key. Observe people's reaction.

As I've said before, you don't need a TrackIR until you own one.

sure, I feel you. However the software I mentioned in the first post is free and requires only a webcam. Its by no means perfect but I dig it and have found it to work pretty well ingame. I normally milsim using ACE 2 and find it adds to my tactical awareness. Now by no means is this a replacement for Trackir, but it works for us cheap asses out there who want to see what its like.

TrackIR 5 user here. Highly recommended. TrackIR / head tracking is one of those things that once you start using it, it's hard to play without it. :)

By the way, TrackIR doesn't only allow you to look to the sides, but also you can look up and down, and lean left / right. This is an advantage because when you lean behind a corner with TrackIR, you can do it smoothly, only leaning as much as you need to. With button you lean immediately all the way. TrackIR also gives you better situational awareness, as you can quickly glance around you without having to change the direction you are moving or aiming.

Check

by Dslyecxi to see how it can change your gameplay experience. 6:12 forward is most relevant to dayZ.

I have only to picture this from your description to send me into bouts of tear-filled laughter. At my desk. At work. LMAO. Have some rep. That's fucking hilarious.

I don't understand why anyone would use this. You have to move your head in real life... so it's like you move your head to look to the side, but you still have to keep your eyes on the screen, which is really painful. Why would you do that? Constantly waving your head around, it gets very stressful on your neck.

Now if there was something like this to track your eye movement instead (I know this exists, just don't know how expensive...) then this would be so much better instead.

I could find this useful if I was surrounded by monitors... My eyes still remain stationary which would be annoying as hell.

Watch the Dslyecxi's video and you get better idea of it. You only move your head a little, and the in-game head moves much more (this is adjustable). It feels very natural to use it and doesn't strain the neck.

Using Track IR with three 40" screens.

I'm getting used the the fisheye effect in the corners where the Zeds appear closer than they really are. Actually its nice as I get an artificial zoom on those extreme edges, so it helps in moving between the roaming Zeds on my sides

I don't want to miss my TrackIR anymore, got it since almost forever and bought it for Rise of Flight back in the days. Makes it much easier from time to time, though temporarily disabling it via one of the additional mousebuttons is kinda mandatory.

Those who use it get used to it and it will fit in each ones style of gameplay.
