dallas 5195 Posted July 12, 2012 Just throw it away, especially if zombies are around, they'll hear the smashing glass and will slowly go and investigate the sound. Good way to lure zombies out of buildings, away from the loot.

Do you use the same button as the one to throw a grenade in arma 2?
Dingus (DayZ) 429 Posted July 12, 2012 (edited) No. At present it exists as a distraction item to zombies. Press 'F' to select the 'Throw' option in weapons. This is for any junk items you can throw, cans or bottles.yes, works just like a grenade, minus the explosion. Edited July 12, 2012 by Dingus
dallas 5195 Posted July 12, 2012 (edited) Empty cans work the same way. If zombies hear the sound they will turn and walk to the sound, investigate it and eventually move on. Road flares work the same way at night, only as a visual distraction. Smoke grenades are slightly different as zombie go crazy, rush to the smoke and tries to attack it.Press F as above and then hold fire to throw, with practise you can throw them more accurate. One thing though, if you throw an item while being prone holding a handgun, you'll complete the throwing animation, but wont actually throw the item, then your model will change to a crouched position and throw it again. If you want to throw an item, while lying down, make sure you're holding your rifle. Edited July 12, 2012 by Dallas
kirai 18 Posted July 12, 2012 So if I get this right. Just press F and hold down fire, release when you want to throw it. This works with a rifle equiped or no weapon equiped at all? With a gun equiped, its buged so keep away from that? Right? You dont need to equip the can/bottle as you do with a weapon? One more thing while I'm at it. I have both an hatchet and a rifle but I can't seem to equip the hatchet (think of using it as a weapon when I wan't to be silent).
Dingus (DayZ) 429 Posted July 12, 2012 It's not that simple. At the top right of the screen you should be able to see in some green text, the firing mode you are in. If you have a rifle, it may say semi/burst or something. Pressing 'F' changes that firing mode. You want to change it to 'throw' then press your fire key, mousebutton whatever, to throw it. Holding down fire will create a more powerful throw. You do not need to equip it. it only needs to sit in your inventory, like a flare would. As for your hatchet issue, you need to have inventory space to put the rifle. If you equip the hatchet, where does the rifle go? I tend to simply drop my primary weapon to use my hatchet when I need to, then return the hatchet to toolbelt and pick my weapon back up.
kirai 18 Posted July 12, 2012 (edited) Thanks that explains my confusion. I go so much on realism in this game so I thought. Of course I must grab what I want to throw. So for the hatchet thing the way to switch between rifle and hatchet to use the hatchet in some positions and then quickly change to rifle if I need to, I need lots of space in my backpack so well, I will use the hatchet for one purpose, to chop wood but I will be afraid of loosing my rifle in the woods if I drop it. Heard people who said that the best thing is to drop things on a flat surface and thats rather impossible in the woods :P Edited July 12, 2012 by Secutor
Dingus (DayZ) 429 Posted July 12, 2012 Heard people who said that the best thing is to drop things on a flat ground and thats rather impossible in the woods :PCorrect. If you drop something on an incline, it can sometimes clip into the ground and get lost, because the item itself will lay flat whether you like it or not.As for space for weapons, I think primary weapons take up 6 spaces? Someone may need to correct me. If you have the space, then sure, you could put the gun in the bag or something. I love the hatchet myself and when I'm just starting, find myself torn between it and the other weapons I find.

I thought of using the hatchet for choping wood mostly hmm but now it seems I have to choose or take the risk of loosing my rifle but then as it is right now I can't keep em both. The thing is, hatchet is not that good against other players who shoots at you so this is a hard decission.....I wish they would fix the thing with the risk of loosing something you drop if its not a flat surface. I mean its not that realistic that things get stuck in the ground when you drop em unless your superman and throws it 20 feet into the ground.
Dingus (DayZ) 429 Posted July 12, 2012 Such is life in Day Z.Re hatchet vs players: If you're a great sneaker it works wonders against snipers. It's also incredibly damaging. Sometimes it's worth it to zig zag your way to a player to make the swipe.Good luck.

dallas 5195 Posted July 13, 2012 Btw if you ever need to drop something, do not use the drop button. Best way for item to dissappear. Use the left inventory window and press on the < arrow left of the item's name. The dropped items are still active in the inventory window and if you tilted the camera before you opened the gear menu, you can see the dropped items on the ground. Confirming their location is actually on the ground, before closing the inventory.
