seen countless youtube videos about DayZ already, but not one of them includes the use of items to distract the infected

1. how to use them? buttons to press to equip/throw?

2. if at all, how helpful are they?

3. if thrown with infected already aggro'ed and chasing you, will that distract them?

I've tried and only succeeded once or twice. The cans are kinda quiet and do not offer a loud enough noise and only zombies within a few feet will go towards it.

It is ment for tiny close quaters style I think because it certainly does not help with throwing them long range lol. Yes I have stood top of a cliff and thrown it up and out lol.

Just best to have one in hand, so you see a circle o on your screen, then throw just past a zombie... they should follow.

People don't seem to understand that these items aren't just for distraction of zombies.

It's possible to kill zombies (and even distract/kill/hurt players) using tin cans and whiskey bottles.

I spent an afternoon running around Cherno unarmed, until I finally hit the jackpot near apartments, some group of guys (6 or 7) were being all commando and stealthy, crouch walking, silenced weapons etcetera, I was pretending to be a nubile player, one without a clue how to crouch. I was running to aggro zombies and I was using mic when they said not to use it. Anyway, getting off topic - I was filling their bags with tin cans/soda cans/whiskey bottles and I tried over the course of an hour to hit each of them with a whiskey bottle (whiskey bottle causes loss of hearing when hit with it, like an explosive) I also discovered that the whiskey bottle can sometimes cause bleeding on players, after 3 hours of throwing whiskey bottles at one particular guy, it actually killed him (they weren't talking in-game at all, I assume they had TS but they seemed to lack organisation). Of course there were a few situations where I was being attacked and I had to take care of the zombies myself, I did this using the junk from the floor, it takes approximately 3 junk thrown at a zombie to kill it, (empty soda can, whiskey bottle, empty tin can).

Whiskey bottles are great, especially for throwing at the feet of players trying to sneak around some infected. Great for a bit of fun when you don't want to resort to banditry :)
