dotbowder 0 Posted July 11, 2012 (edited) When I search for a specific server in a specific city, I see a few servers missing here and there; I see some servers only displaying their version number and no settings, etc.I know there is a uniform way to name ther server but there are a bunch of servers that include little differences used such as order, using |, :, Caps/NoCaps, etc. Especially the issue of the space inbetwen the server number and the country. There are a HUGE chunk of servers that ignore this but it creates two lists when all of the servers are organized aphebetically. (eg: US 100 vs US100)--------------------------A couple of the many different and nonuniform server names are these:eg: US149 (v1.7.2/Beta_94444) dayzmod.com - Hosted by Valhalla Gamingeg: DE13(v1.7.2)beta 94444 (UTC - 7) dayzmod.com - by [sKS]Sonder-Kommando-Strum--------------------------I know that rocket has expressed the idea of leaving the servers to the hosts but this is something that isn't constraining to hosts and makes it much easier and simpler to use for the client. Also the implementation for this wouldn't cause too much of a problem. Could we please get this implimented as a requirement, or at least have a recommendation emailed to all server hosts? There is a discussion on reddit but has been receiving a decent amount of upvotes. Much of the community wants this: http://www.reddit.co...tandard_server/Edit1: Added examples of server names that conflict in style/information.Edit2: Removed ideas of changing the conventional way now that I know there is a conventional way to name servers.Edit3: Added Reddit link to show some support for this. caspar 17 Posted July 11, 2012 (edited) A Nameconvetion already exist. The new format is: DayZ - Location ID (version/beta buildnr) [difficulty][timezone] dayzmod.com - hosted by CustomtextWith alternative long format (includes the city): DayZ - Location ID OptionalCity (version/beta buildnr) [difficulty][timezone] dayzmod.com - hosted by CustomtextThis was announced by the Dev's but i cant find the Thread in the New Forum so fast ^^. All Serverhosts should follow this Rule. Edited July 11, 2012 by Caspar
dotbowder 0 Posted July 11, 2012 (edited) Many of the servers I find do not follow this rule though and it makes for a messy/unordered list which is the issue that I wish to address. Is there a way to batch email all of the server hosts and request this change for the hosts that do not currently follow it?For instance when I searched for your server, DE 10, I found that DE 100- DE 109 all placed their country and server number together, this pulls them into a sepparate order, or list when organized aphabetically. Also many servers arent displaying their timezones. Edited July 11, 2012 by DBowder
caspar 17 Posted July 11, 2012 @DBoweder,you will laugh, but i've already opened a thread in the Serveradmin-GoogleGroup about this topic some weeks ago. A huge discussion started. But to be honest, there were no really result except a reminder of the Dev's that Serveradmins have to change to the new Name convention.I can only suggest that they will wait until all Serveradmins have entered their Application to insert their old Servers into the new Ticketsystem. If this is finished they have a more or less accurate list of responsible Persons for the Servers. What exactly they plan to force Serveradmins to rename their Servers is out of my range. Method (DayZ) 5 Posted July 11, 2012 There absolutely needs to be some kind of naming convention for servers.
dotbowder 0 Posted July 11, 2012 @MethodApparently there is (read prior posts) but a large number of the hosts either haven't heard about it or just don't care.
mosimo 0 Posted July 11, 2012 One thing I've noticed there are a few servers that are taking the same location/ID There is a "DE77" and a "DE 77" both hosted by two different people.
mahatmajonny 6 Posted July 11, 2012 (edited) Why do you want a fully enforced and standardized naming convention? I can't think of any other game out there that has this. Are you frustrated by the limitation of the browser because it doesn't fully display game settings? If you use the six launcher you can do a search for server name, so if you want Chicago just search for "Chicago". It seems that you should be able to find at least one server that meets your criteria in just a few seconds. Maybe it makes sense to enforce listing out settings in a specific way so you can search for them, but dictating exactly what a server can call itself seems draconian. funionz 7 Posted July 11, 2012 Absolutely. The current rules are far too lax/not enforced. I'm tired of seeing the whole DayZ/DayZ Zombie RPG split list for one, also city location is largely irrelevant when you choose by ping anyways
dotbowder 0 Posted July 11, 2012 mahatmajonnyHonestly... it is probably just a light case of OCD. The servers for this game are already numbered and have potential to be a nice and neat little thing. Being a game that works by method of a cloud server to maintain your profile amongst all servers, the ability to find new servers needs to be quick, easy, and simple. If my friend asks me to come to US 37, I can easily and quickly do this with a simple and good user experience. It takes more time and is more convoluted to have the current chaotic structure, although less time than most other games with community hosted servers. Most games that I have seen without standardized naming conventions don't have a cloud profile for all servers. This allows each server to develop its own individuality and thus break off itself into a clan server or whatever. I don't know about you but I would rather have a friend tell me to head over to US 37 rather than head over to Clan ZHF server, they used special characters in the name so you have to search for -=Z|-|F=- so that you find it. The structure for a neat and clean server list is there it just needs to be applied.
SG-17 19 Posted July 11, 2012 Every server should be required to signifiy in their name whether 3rd person and crosshairs are on or off. Many servers do, but then again many do not.
MrLuigi 0 Posted July 11, 2012 The only thing I needed/wanted in a server name was a city. Like Seattle 1 or Vancouver 2. Even if all the servers are hosted in Seattle or Dallas, finding a server with people from the same area with same pings to the server was the best thing to me. cent 1 Posted July 11, 2012 Yes I agree. Better yet, can we start blacklisting servers which have lazy admins who cant be assed to update their displayed VERSION? I hate connecting to 1.7.2 servers when the server title says 1.7.1.5, and then it deletes my gear or throws me into debug plains. Seriously. Fuck off. You don't deserve to host a server if you're an indolent host.
