It also works if you land on another person or a zombie. I was once pinned ontop of the townhall of Chernogorsk and i was trying to go around the ledge on the front I stood up and fell off... I landed on a monkey zombie and slid down its back and perfectly onto the ground running to survive another 30minutes. :)

Battlefield was like that too, as long as you held the back button while you fell you were pretty much invincible.
