How to see player names ingame?

Recommended Posts

Now that the spacebar command is removed, how can I tell the names of players that are in my vicinity?

It's very chaotic not to now who is who in a group of people.

IMHO its how it should be, scan hacks (commander space bar) is designed for SP comanding AI.

A total immersionn killer IMHO.

I never said that they should bring it back did I?

Many arma mods have solutions where you can see the names of players that are very close to you. Like Project Reality you can use left alt key when next to someone to show their nick for a few seconds.

I thought they maybe had done something similar when they removed the spacebar scan.

In real life you can easily tell people apart and put a name to their face.

In games we need some sort of name tag to keep track.

Disabling the cross hair removes this when aiming at a player, space bar scan removes it the way you described. Personally I think space bar should go and cross hair remain unless some other way of getting ID's is added.

Ideal would be to have no on screen data (space bar scan/cross hair) but aiming at/very close to someone for specific amount of time depending on distance to player would show their name. Point blank it should show pretty much instantly, long range take a few seconds.

I honestly hate the fact that names have been removed. It is a serious pain in the ass, and moreover, incredibly unrealistic to have to go through a huge hassle to connect the chat speech of an individual with their in=game persona, and differentiate 5 or so identical models when you are in a group.

The removal of names is an incredibly unintuitive step backwards that constantly destroys the immersion and contributes nothing but frustration.

A way to check names is something that should make it back in. But it DOES need something so it doesn't become a cheat. Otherwise you might get people scanning the horizon jamming whatever button to see if someone is out there as a one pixel speck

My suggestion is playertags within 30-50 metres.

I think Cuel suggestion would be good if they could get that working. Alternatively (as it is still cool to be able to hide from someone as they walk past two meters away in the pitch black) is to have a group system, so when you meet someone for the first time, you have to introduce yourself, but afterwards you can join each others group which then shows player tags. Though this is probably harder to implement than the 30 - 50 meter tag visibility above, and might end up breaking a lot of game mechanics if attempted (grouping could cause all sorts of debug and server issues).

My other alternative would be the option to let players customize a consistent uniform (so it doesn't change each login) that individualizes everyone, thus making it easier to distinguish individuals via their physical appearance. I know we can already do so with player faces, but it's still difficult to determine who's who with the current system.

It's been debated alot on Project Reality forum, the majority do want playernames in one form or another.

I know it's supposed to reflect reality, and all that but not beeing able to see who is who is really frustrating.

Yeah, some sort of player names are necessary as it's so hard to distinguish players without them. If it could be limited to close range that would be great, I don't want to be able to use it to detect people 300m away.

I had a band of new players trying to organize a group, a good four of us.

We didn't see our names since the difficulty was veteran or so, so for the next 10 minutes we proceeded to spam side/global with 'Who are you' 'Oh so that's who you are' 'Wait so who's the guy with the rifle' 'No the other rifle' 'Wait who are you again?'. Eventually it got chaotic and weird when we met another group of three up in Stary and we didn't even notice how the identical looking 4th member tagged along with the wrong group. Not long after we split up because it got frustrating and was communication hell.

I'm all for realism but this is not realistic to begin with.

Second of all, realism is nice, but not when it makes the game Not Fun.
