Buying a new computer - Post your specs!

Hi, guys, recently I bought ARMA2:CO, which I mainly did to play DayZ. The game in my opinion is great, I love the steep learning curve, but low FPS reminded me that I needed a new computer and that I should never buy gaming laptops, which definitely suck :) But I am not that experienced in these situations, so I would like to get some opinion. There is bunch of things that I ask of those who decide to post their specs:

1- Your computer's specs (Duh!)

2- How long have you had it?

3- Are you happy with your current configuration/Would you recommend it to me?

My main goal here is to put together a computer that will be enough for me for 3 years, after that I'll be moving to Germany to go to med school, which won't anymore allow me to play games. Of course I wanna play DayZ, but I wanna be able to play other games, too. (By which I mean with decent graphics, if not the best)

P.S: The price isn't that much of an issue, but as I said, I just need the computer for 3 years, so a computer which rocks for 10 years is kinda overkill for me.

P.S2: I am not English, so sorry if there are sh*tload of mistakes, by the way, I'd love some opinion about my grammer if it is not a problem for you guys. Flaming, hate, mock, and other sh*t are accepted :)

250gb hdd

800w PSU

I'll have to upgrade the RAM, CPU, and GPU by the time arma 3 rolls around.

Used to have an i5 3.3, 8 gigs ram, an hd6860, and a tb hdd, it was unstoppable.

I agree, this looks live a heavy downgrade, especially on the GPU, most nVidia GTS are out done by the new GTX counterparts.

I have bought my computer like 2 months ago:

i5 3570k with noctua d14 cooler

gtx 680 from zotac (the Asus gtx 670 dc2t would do it for less money and around the same fps)

corsair 16gb 1600MHz kit (8gb will do it but it was soooo cheap :D)

Asus Maximus V gene Mainboard

128 GB Samsung 830 Series and a 500GB hdd(like 2 TB external but thats up anyone how much they need

And a Fractal Design Define R3 in Black which i totally like because its just that simple ;D

Dont know if u need a Screen but i have bought the Benq xl 2420t which i really like.

There are better Systems around for sure but i am happy with my computer and totally think its worth the money. Maybe u can save some money with a few components which do the same job for less money.

Runs ALL games really well, I play a lot of DCS-A10 with a warthog flight stick for full realism, this thing gets you IN the game... Runs Dayz like a dream

Why are you getting that? That is not going to run DayZ well at all.

That's seriously fantastic, but like I said I am only going to use the computer for 3 years, that kinda build would not be suitable for me. The guy who wrote before you had a fantastic build that suits me perfectly, but I think I am going to downgrade the GPU, because it is kinda expensive where I live. And also not going to buy the SSD, will it affect playing DayZ, as it continuously streams data from HDD?

I purchased the ASUS CM6730 computer and the ViewSonic 22" 1920x1080P Monitor 7 months ago for $500. Last month I bought the Sapphire 7850 OC Edition card to go with it and the CPU liquid cooler + case + case fan.

I've been able to play EVERY game I've come across on max settings, except for this game. Battlefield 3 runs at 30+ FPS at ultra settings (antialiasing all of the way up), and when I overclock my graphics card even further, it runs at a more steady 40+ FPS at ultra settings (antialiasing all of the way up). Arma 2 Dayz Mod, however, I find myself having issues. On very high settings I found my frame rate fluctuate A LOT, literally at 50+ in areas with not much activity, and as low as 20 FPS in really intense areas. I keep it now on High settings and it's a steady 35+ FPS.

I definitely suggest the bulk of my build, it works phenomenally and the parts aren't too expensive, the only things I suggest you change are the CPU, get a I5-2500k so you can overclock it, get a motherboard that supports overclocking, get an SSD for the main/boot drive, and use the 1TB for extra storage but make sure it's at least 7200 RPM. Lastly, extra Mhz on the ram can't hurt, 1600 Mhz or better.

Built my computer about 3 months ago. Cash was tight so I went with AMD which isn't a bad choice.

First thing I did was test out Crysis. Coming from a "gaming" laptop the Asus G72 which ran Crysis on medium/high settings. I was pleasantly surprised when this build ran it on ultra with no hiccups and all for around $900 to build it. Runs through The Witcher 2 all high settings, Skyrim on max with some hi-res texture mods.

As far as Arma II, the FX-6100 can handle some pretty massive battles with little trouble.

Dayz is cakewalk.

That price is not including software and all the extras like a 5.1 Logitech surround or monitor. All in all I'm about $1400~ in and still planning on adding to it. You can pick up the better 8 cores for low $200 now.

Atamawood and Sterling, you guys have been tremendously helpful, so far I decided bunch of things, but my build is mainly going to be based on Atamawood's build. You had me at "Runs through The Witcher 2 all high settings..." If I can find your components here in my country, I'll definitely buy it, though 5.1 Logitech surround is not good for my budget. I have some questions though:

1) Why did you choose AMD FX 6100 over Intel i7 or i5 series? Is it mainly because of the money issue or just found it better? Was the overclock really necessary, or you just wanted the extra speed (What is the actual speed of the CPU?) ? Each one of the 6 cores individually runs at 4.1 GHz, right?

2) I did a bit of a research and stumbled upon that XFX Radeon 6870 doesn't have 2 GB VRAM? Did you install two of them or have I screwed up my research?

3) Do you think you'll be able to run ARMA 3 when it's released?

I know little about putting a computer together and I think you'll have to sorry me :) Especially about the first question :)

1) I choose the AMD mainly due to money to be honest. I really wanted to build a kit with the Intel i5 2500k which is the better cpu. But everything intel is just more money. I was actually afraid that I wasn't spending enough and I've never had AMD before. But I really was blown away by its performance.

As far as the oc'ing, it comes stock at 3.3ghz and was plenty powerful enough at that, I wanted to overclock because the software that came with the Asus mobo made it so wonderfully easy so why not? I built a beast and I wanted to get the most out of it XD. But I really don't think its necessary.

2) Here is a link to the GPU I purchased from Tigerdirect. I actually purchased the 2gb model because they were out of stock of the 1gb model. TBH 1gb is really all that is needed however more will be more "future" proof.

3) As far as Arma III, I have no doubts that this machine will be able to handle it. I believe I heard somewhere that Arma III will be better optimized for so overall performance should be better than Arma II.

And about the Witcher 2. That was the game that actually made me decide to build a computer. The laptop I had before that was very good till the Witcher 2 came as it was the first game I found I had to run on low settings :(

So you may imagine how I screamed like a little girl when I ran the Witcher 2 for the first time on this computer. :D

Well I'm very happy to help you out. If at all possible I would suggest taking a look at the 8 cores, those are really nice and compare with the mid/highish tier i7s. Of course you can always upgrade as well. There is also a newer version of the 6 core which is the FX-6200 and its a little better optimized and what not and is at stock clock 3.8!

The thing about building computers is new stuff is always coming out and it can get a little overwhelming and times.
