How long until zombies despawn after leaving an area?

Do they despawn after X time when no one is within X distance from their spawn, or just if no one is within X distance after spawning them? I imagine this has been asked before but I wasn't able to find an answer.

EDIT: To clarify, I want to know what the exact time/distance is, if anyone happens to know.

I think it's somewhere along those lines... usually if you're over 300m away from a town/zed spawn and you see them, that means someone else has spawned them :p

I know they spawn when you're within 300m, what I want to know is how long and what conditions have to be met for them to despawn.
