How to equip a gun?

Well, my issue is I have found a makarov and it auto equips it, but when I press left mouse button it shows some flare and throws a green flare, I have no idea how to shoot from my gun! Can someone help me please? I even press R to reload but nothing happens! I have 3 magazines so it's not ammo. Thank you.

I know it's not hard to read the controls, but this forum is for helping people so why shouldn't I use it? lol, thanks btw.
