Slyguy65 499 Posted July 7, 2012 So this term "anti game" that hardcorists seem to drench over, what exactly does it mean? Correct me if im wrong, but should i assume (from what ive heard) this "anti game" concept is literally meant to be "un-fun" and "miserable"....Ya uh...WTF? last time i checked that is called real life...isn't the point of playing games to be fun, and enjoyable....and all that jazz...why are people wanting an experience that is filled with nothing except what they deal with on a regular (semi regular) basis?(Note: not saying life is miserable...just saying life is already an "anti game")Im just saying is this "anti game" concept not already the exact same thing as the reality we already live in...?IMO it is doing a decent job at it since people just view this mod as a venting device for their pent up rage by using it as a murder simulator that feels similar to reality pretty much...and IMO that is pretty disturbing then again most things are disturbing..the obsession with saw and that whole GORE porn thing, the obsession with violence and killing being the main reason why most of are games are FPS games or shooters that involve killing others...just saying.ANYWAY ya did i hit the anti game concept on the head? Or is it more "in-depth" cause from what i read it seems like the intention of this game is to be "annoying" and "impossible" instead of challenging...to be honest it felt like there was a bunch of sarcasm in some of the text i read and other times it sounded serious soooo ya which is it? imagelesskjc 35 Posted July 7, 2012 Some people find the portions of the game that you might consider "unfun", as fun.You see red, I see blue. You see crap, I see art. You don't get it, we do. It doesn't mean you or I are lesser because of it, we just have different definitions of enjoyment.
Oddball_E8 1 Posted July 7, 2012 Ive always found the term "anti-game" to mean more or less, "we will give you the premices of the situation: you are alone, unarmed and has to survive. How you do this is up to you, we will not reward you or punish you for picking one choice over the other"In other words, its not like other games that try to teach you how to play the game. Its just a sandbox for you to play in with no consequenses for your choices as to how you play.
Powell (DayZ) 734 Posted July 7, 2012 I game that is "not fun", so to speak. A game that challenges the Status quo
Rakkasan 23 Posted July 7, 2012 There are no points, no levels , no rewards, no unlocks, no quests, no auction houses, no perks. Just you and other noobs trying to survive. That is why it is an anti game. This anti game has put Arma 2 back on the map and game developers are paying close attention to this I can assure you. Even if this mod fails it has opened the eyes of future projects from other game developers.
Miss_Nuts 9 Posted July 7, 2012 Tough. I kind of agree with the OP and previous poster. However, I'm inclined to say that if you don't get enjoyment out of a game (can we say Silent Hill 5?) then don't play it.I know it sounds like a brush off statement, but to be honest, its the most honest one you'll get. Dont like? Dont partake. The big difference between life and this 'anti-game' is that you can choose NOT to partake in the game, whereas life - tough. So not to be a party pooper, but if it's not your thing, no need to stress over it! Find something that you enjoy. As above poster said, there are many that enjoy the game in it's intentions so we'll stick around.
*=LP=*Cpt.Kawa 57 Posted July 7, 2012 What is the definition of an anti-game? Nobody knows I guess. IMO this is just a nice, and a bit unforgiving FPS on a big map. One can still "play" it, one can get rewards/satisfaction out of it - so still a normal game with some very intense and emotional moments in it.An anti-game might be a "game" where you hit spawn and at the very same moment you are dead again, but I guess nobody would "play" something like that. Except maybe some very sad persons and if such persons exists you would find them here on the forums...^^
imagelesskjc 35 Posted July 7, 2012 From my understanding an Anti-game goes against the traditional embodiment and characteristics of a game. Its genre breaking, and atypical. For example, EVE online is the anti-game to other MMO's. It redefined what an MMO could be, and introduced new gaming elements that were unprecedented. (I.E. The way skills train, player interaction and sandbox, unsharded universe etc.)It doesn't mean that they have to be hard games (Although EVE/DayZ are much harder than others in their respective "genres"), they just goes against values that people have taken for granted.(Edit- Maybe being atypical is just what makes them hard, seeing as we as gamers aren't used to them?) deepfried 95 Posted July 7, 2012 What is a game? its a sum of gameplay mechanics. So an anti-game is basically a simulator of some sort, that doesn't employ "gameplay mechanics" but rather just modelling something real... whether its fun or not.
