The Poacher 31 Posted July 7, 2012 Who clearly logged with the intention of reappearing behind you. Legit or not? Discuss.
Shinylemon (DayZ) 0 Posted July 7, 2012 Should be banned (the ghoster) without a second thought. What a bunch of horse shit. You aren't at fault as he disconnected first.

But thanks for jumping to conclusions, you masochist. I like a legitimate fight and if someone ambushes me and kills me then good for them, but I refuse to die to someone who is cheating. Have fun being killed by exploiters, friend.
KField86 237 Posted July 7, 2012 Got killed by a ghoster this morning. No ghillie suit. I spotted him prone behind a car about 500 meters away, then he creeped out a little bit and immediately disappeared. He logged back in, I took a shot, and he disappeared again. Then, he miraculously appears 5m behind me, with an AKM, and lights up my back. Same player. I payed attention to the server list. There was no way he moved because in order to get to me he would of had to cross pretty much open field. If he had a ghillie suit and proned the whole way I could understand it, but there was no movement. Lost my m24 to him. Shits retarded honestly. So, because I have someone pinned and they have an estimate of where I am, they can log off and spawn in directly behind me and get a free kill, and possibly amazing gear? It's ridiculous. My squad had the same thing happen to us at NEAF one time. Guy with an M107 would constantly ghost to flank us, and ended up taking down 3/6 of our squad who all fanned out and took cover when we heard the first shot. We had one sniper get a confirmed visual on his location, and then nothing more. He originally fired from the west, then 2 minutes later was firing shots from the east, then north. There is just no way 6 people didn't catch any movement. Again, no ghillie suit. We all have very keen eyes as well.
"Lost" Alice 205 Posted July 7, 2012 Yea, three of us got taken out by a ghoster near stary this morning, he shot anders in the head first, and then when we were keeping a sharp eye out, he suddenly appeared behind us and wasted us (he was a TERRIBLE shot, so I could see why he had to resort to ghosting). When Tim went down in front of me, I considered logging to save my life from the ghoster, but I decided not to. Goodbye all my medical supplies :( I don't mind dying, this game is cruel and I've accepted that, but dying to complete bullshit is extremely frustrating. Xianyu 820 Posted July 7, 2012 Logging out to avoid ghosters is legit.I was in the northern airfield, in the barracks, with a friend, looting. No, we weren't server hopping. We cleared the barracks, made sure it was empty, and then began looking through the loot. My friend was in the bathroom, when we heard footsteps. So I went prone in the room I was in (third from last) and just laid there watching the door, because I know the windows are magical bullet-stoppers. Guy starts talking to me in direct chat (doesn't know about my friend in the bathroom). We have the tactical advantage, and it's the goddamn BARRACKS, so when he says 'leave and we won't shoot you' I'm like 'lolno.' So then it's 'leave or we will kill you.'I say 'bring it'.So the guy is like 'okay, we're logging out now'. And he actually does leave the server. I smell a trap: so I get up, and RUN to the end room of the barracks, and wouldn't you know it? His faggot friend has just finished logging in to the farthest room.Well, a M4 on single shot does not measure up to a M14. I killed him, and then both my friend and I logged off. I have absolutely no regrets.I'm not going to continue to 'play fair' against a player who abuses the rules. If they do this 'ghosting' bullshit to get the perfect edge on me, then I will remove myself from their bullshit equations.Until there are measures put in to stop ghosting, I will log out when faced with a ghoster. Desaan 0 Posted July 7, 2012 It's one of only a few major flaws the mod currently has but probably the most detrimental. They need to come up with a solution to the server hop loot farming and ghosting. It's out of control, especially as more people become aware of it being an easy way to cheat the game. It's definitely solvable but it all depends how high or low it is on the devs priority list and the longer they leave it the more it will annoy the community. endomatic@gmail.com 0 Posted July 7, 2012 Some guys from the Clan =OSF= on France 16 did this to me. =OSF=Necessary Evil. I sniped and killed 3 of his squad at Stary Sobor, he disconnected, went to his server, France 16, and then reconnected right behind me.Then he left really rude messages all over the map. Then when I started to enter their server for payback, they decided to password it. KField86 237 Posted July 7, 2012 I log out when someone sees me and they disconnect now. I don't have time for that shit anymore. Like someone else said, I chose not to be apart of there bullshit equation. I'll just goto a different server if I'm playing solo. If they can constantly DC, so can I. The difference is, my intent is to stay alive, and there's is to get an unfair advantage on someone because they know they have the lower-hand that was dealt. It's like peaking at another players poker cards at a casino table. Guess what happens when they're caught? They get thrown the fuck out. Soon enough the same will happen. septuscap 42 Posted July 7, 2012 The best solution I've heard to ghosting is to not let some one reconnect to server A after having d/c'ed from server A and connected to server B. Maybe put a 30 minute cooldown before they can reconnect to server A. The only time I've legitimately had to do this was when I had my tent on server A, but the admins kept taking the server down for days at a time, so the next time I saw it up I just moved all my shit from server A to server B. But aside from that I can't think of a real use-case for letting people hop between two servers repeatedly; 90% of the time it's probably a ghost. More importantly though, logging out should take 30seconds+ and should have an animation (kind of like when you're bandaging, making a fireplace, etc). It'd be nice if you saw the player setting up a bed and knew it meant he was logging out.
Validuz 0 Posted July 7, 2012 To my very long internet career Ghosting is when on LAN or splitscreening is when you are watching another players screen.Or as urban dictionary says:Ghosting, or "to ghost" is The act of one or more dead players spectating an alive enemy player, with the intent of revealing his or her actions or location to their alive comrades, giving them an unfair situational advantage. This is achieved usually through a voice chat program, such as Ventrillo, or an IRC client. Dont change the meaning of this word. What he is doing is simply serverhopping 2.0. Bower 4 Posted July 7, 2012 Thanks Validuz. The DayZ community seems to be changing the definition of ghosting and I'm not sure why. The "ghosting" aspects from the fact that a dead player is usually the one relaying the tactical information to a live player hence "ghost".
The Poacher 31 Posted July 7, 2012 Dont change the meaning of this word. What he is doing is simply serverhopping 2.0.Fair enough, it just seems to be what everyone is calling it. Ghosting, Nightcrawlering, Serverhopping. All are just fancy ways of saying 'bullshit'.

It's also pretty surprising how you shot and killed someone through a wall when there was no legit way you could have known he was there.Edit: you don't even show up in the server log, even if the server was locked it would say "Barnaby uses modified data file." Unless you didn't use the name Barnaby, of course there would only be a few reasons for that.
Mastiff (DayZ) 42 Posted July 8, 2012 Log out but go onto a totally different server and continue your businessBut aside from that I can't think of a real use-case for letting people hop between two servers repeatedly; 90% of the time it's probably a ghost. Apart from lag, lag, desync, shitty admin, abusive players, hackers, strollers with wire fencing... server downtime, If my regular server isn't online I tend to hop until I find a suitable one, although I'm usually in a forest when I do that, though rarely between the same servers though it has happened when I'm lured in by the pingG
