But..... Why?

This already exists on PC as a mod.  Turning a barrel into a flat piece of metal is ridiculously difficult and not in any way plausible, honestly.  Especially with a wrench.  There aren't even nuts to wrench on.  Scavenging for already flat pieces of metal is authentic.

With the addition of the cutting torch, with a hammer, I’d say you could get two pieces of sheet metal. That would make sense. The top and bottom of the barrel, being round, wouldn’t “become “ square. So those would be lost in the process.
