Realism...

Recommended Posts

Just saw a reply by a forum user named: thorgold

Hands down has to be the best sentence against the people crying out for realism:

"ENOUGH with the "it isn't realistic." We're fighting zombies, we never have to shit, and we respawn with full memories of our past lives."

He's exactly right. This mod is not entirely realistic, it just has more realism than your average game.

How are Zombies realistic anyways? You cant say what a realistic zombie should do because there is no such thing

(yet :P).

A zombies realism comes down to indivdual opinions.

Personally i prefer the slow zombies with their hands out forward, but this game wouldnt benefit from that, and if it were to, you would need hoards and hoards. Resident evil got away with this because it was a corridor style game.

As far as the overall survival realism... what more do you want? You have to eat, drink, stay warm, choose what items are necessary to carry, and do that all in an archaic world.

I think this mod is a building block for many beautiful games to come, so lets just play and enjoy, instead of debate what a realistic zombie apocalypse would be.

But DayZ isn't about Zombies, it's about everyone killing each other in some deranged paranoid power fantasy. The Zombies are only there to set the mood.

Let's not forget that food works like health potions, you respawn, your weapons have stats, and anyone with certain select pieces of gear can play god any time they want to.

People need to wake up and realize it's a privilege to play this game, not a right. This modification is free of charge, therefore you treat it as such and stop demanding things like an utter retard.

My list of wants:

Removal of the deathmatch glass ceiling by use of:

End of sniping dominance

Removal of NVGs

Removal of murder/kill count on debug monitor

Severe decrease in ammunition and weapon spawn rate

All very simple changes, but they don't get made, why?

It's not because nobody wants to balance the game, it's because they're too busy catering to one powerset. Deathmatching is the Flavor of the Game. They get to play god any time they want and pick people off while suffering no consequence of reprecussion. They don't need anyone else because they can simply log-out the moment players get too close for comfort, switch to another server, and repeat.

So while I don't feel entitled to dictate the game the way I completely want it, I do feel that DayZ is nothing short of false advertising in its current form. I want to change that, even if it means making patches and updates that go against the "hardcore" obsession. There's nothing hardcore about DayZ right now, I'm sorry. There are few things realistic too.

Ahh, good 'ole Virfortis is back. I almost thought you were finally done for good.

Right back to claiming the game is a deathmatch and everyone kills each other constantly despite there being stats right on the front page of this very website showing that 82% of active living players are not bandits, there's a 90:1 zombie to player kill ratio, and the average life expectancy has been consistently rising since bandit skins were taken out of the game several patches ago. Only about 15% of survival attempts end in murder. Yet, somehow it's a "constant deathmatch."

Why don't your ideas get implemented Virfortis?

Because they're bad ideas. That's why.

And because you're trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist.

There's a fine line between realism and video games, and video games can only go inches across the line.

Realism in games is merely a relative measure and involves various aspects from gameplay to graphics.

Just because a game has a fictional element like zombies doesn't mean it can't be *realistic* in other areas.

Realism doesn't necessarily conflict with *fun* either, which is a very subjective thing anyway.

All that said, I do slightly cringe when people call ArmA a "realistic military simulator" despite it being riddled with quirky issues and 'gamey' aspects (like the magical healing and resupply system).

I don't mind it being called realistic, because compared to most other FPS, it is. Some of it is just symbolic, because it would be hard to simulate certain things, like surgery in a game that is not a medical sim...so you just slap a bandaid on it. It's good enough.

What I don't like is people that use the "..BUT REALISM!" every time they see someone suggest something they don't like, whether it's relevant to realism or not.

Just like people that yell "Godwin!" every time hitler or the nazis are mentioned. No argument required.

Or "OCCAMS RAZOR!!" when they refuse to consider all options in a given discussion.

People trying to sound smart, when they are anything but.

What people don't like is arcade-like mechanics.

Particularly vitriolic responses are reserved for game mechanics similar toothed MP FPS games (I haven't played them), like the Battlefield series of Call Of Duty.

For instance, I bet that's why we can use axes and crowbars but not knives just now.

And there will likely never be knife throwing, for example, in DayZ.

The general community wants a certain feeling of authenticity, but certainly everyone accepts certain facets.

Having to eat, or starve, seems to add a psychological note of realism. Having it take real life weeks would not even be a slight threat to the players current life. Likewise, thirst. It is "arcade-y". But it still persists because it adds what I think of as a note of realism.

Same with many things. I can put a full Jerry can of fuel into my backpack? Um..... But I could conceivably carry one. But not run with it forever or even walk...

It is, indeed, pseudo-realism. But again, the mod currently has a strong feeling of authenticity. I run faster than a normal human and never tire, but I get out of breath and it causes my aim to be off..

The whole point is that the game gives a certain feel lacking elsewhere, and anything that pushes toward that feel of existing games is going to get very stiff backlash, here.

It's good to remember that mechanics are being tested. So sure, none breaking and bleeding can be a pain in the ass, but getting a broken bone doesn't crash the game. Bleeding can lead to unconsciousness. Zombies hitting you does not cause an exception error, &c.

Yes, there are in game bugs that fuck your character/avatar/icon over. But the mechanics "work" in game, and we are all bitching to have them tweaked a certain way. That is for beta. For now, it's focusing on the actual game breakers, not the things that make a player pissed because they lost their good loot.

I'm enjoying the game and have been for just less than two months. The forums are mostly a place to troll, get the rare useful suggestion, help coherent new players and find out about announcements from those developing the mod.

Like real life, most of it is chaff. Separate your grain in a high wind area.

Lets be honest if you look there are a lot more zombies than humans and therefore its no surprise there are more npc deaths but when non friendly humans encounter it usually ends with a log out or a murder. I've even starte,d killing other people and not even for their loot but to protect myself as if I'm spotted I'm more likely killed so... yeh the last 3 encounters I have had resulted in me killing the other player, I feel like 'deathmatch' might be strong label at themoment because I'm not actively hunting humans but they're dead if I meet them. Unless there is a feature to damp

This pretty much sums it up. I'd like the people who are raging about "playablility" to take into consideration that we are all here to TEST this mod. I mean, the button we all had to push on the website clearly states: (Alpha Test). Beta will come when they're ready.

Its also the people that say "I had to buy ARMA2 and OA to play this", that feel they are owed something, when its just a risk we all took to be apart of this.

(i would've paid more now that i've actually seen it in action TBH)

We just need to chill out and watch it bloom.
