Watchtower building behaviour

Does anyone know since when it's not longer possible to build a watchtower if the open/stairside is facing a wall?

Building was "OK" so far some time ago imo. But it's getting a little worse every update without even getting mentioned in the Patchnotes...

"Build Anywhere" mod is essential to build anything decent either way.

I know bro. But mods are not a reason to not implement at least a rudimentary working base building mechanic

Also there's more than enough people playing without mods or on console.
