brand-new player, two questions

I am on a PC and the game runs in Steam.  

Q1 How do I eat?

Q2 what are the boxes 1,2, and 3 for?

help appreciated

You eat by putting whatever it is in your hands and then holding down the left mouse button.  If it's a can, you need a can opener or knife or pick axe or other such weapon to open it first.  You do that by having the can in your hands and then dragging said tool on top of it into the Combine box.  Then, hold down the left mouse button to open the can and then again to eat it.

Those numbers are your hotbar numbers.  You can drag items from your inventory and drop them onto one of those numbers and then you can access that item by pressing that key.  For example, I always put my rags or bandages on the last number so that I can bandage quickly if a bunch of zeds get me.  As you improve and add to your clothing, you'll see additional numbers appear because whatever clothing you just put on adds additional slots to your hot bar.  In the case of ammo for example, you would push and hold that key to reload multiple rounds into the chamber/mag.
