This is just a compilation of the #DayZTips series, updated and reworked for 1.08 Stable Build, with some very basic illustrations. The main intention is to help the new players (and maybe some old players too) along their learning curve with the game and updating them with new modifications and additions. So be sure to save the link. I hope you guys find it useful.

Where should you play? At this point I can safely say that definitely on Community Servers. The presence of admins, DayZ communities and of course mods makes them the best option in my opinion. From there, the choice is very subjective. My advice for a new player would be to always pick a populated server, vanilla or slightly modded. Preferably 1PP with hardcore concept. Learn the basics there and then you'll probably have a better criteria to filter the servers according to their mods, communities, rules and more.

How to play on modded servers? Just open DayZ on Steam, and launch DayZ since the launcher is now the default option. There, just go to servers, Community tab and look for a server. Hit join next to the server name and then "Setup DLCS and mods and join". The launcher will automatically subscribe you to the mods needed to enter the server. Note: You can also join any Official Server or Community Vanilla servers through the launcher.

Map "Levels" basic distribution. Additional info: If you are play on official servers, the character database is shared in a hive. If you change servers you will be respawned to a "server hop spawn point" that is just a little bit inland than the regular spawn points. E.g. If you play on Dayz Public 1PP FL 001 and you jump to Dayz Public 1PP FL 002, your character and gear will remain the same, but you will be teleported to some spawn point close to the coast, even if you were up north.

Speaking about the HUD, these are the elements that you may find in your screen, how they work and how they interact with each other. Note: The passive skills affects some actions in-game, reducing the time of those actions and giving you more items in return (E.g. Chopping down a tree will give you 3 wooden logs instead of 2 if your rough soft skill is high enough). Sadly, passive skills are not properly working as 1.08 goes and they get reset every time you log out (or after a server restart).

Pay close attention to this because it's a recurring mistake and something that the game make very counter-intuitive: you are not full in food and water just because you see the complete grey/white icon. This only means you are above 4% and 24% of your total food/water values respectively. You need to keep eating and drinking to fill the reserves that are not properly represented in the HUD. Not taking this into account will make you think that this game forces you to eat and drink water every 5 minutes, when thats not the case.

Spawning completely as a freshy when it's raining (and especially at night) its probably one of the most difficult scenarios to survive those initial minutes of gameplay. Even for experienced players. The cold (because of the nighttime) will drop your energy levels faster than normal and the rain can worsen the cold and even take some of your HP if your thermometer symbol became empty. Your best alternative when you start is to look for waterproof clothes - being the firefighter suit probably your best alternative as a freshy - or just take some minutes to craft an "improvised heat pack" (Check the tip about this further down.

Be aware that not all the clothes are 100% Waterproof and most of the military gear is simply "Water Resistant", which won't stop you from getting wet or lowering your temperature, it will only do so at a slower rate. 100% Waterproof gear = NBC suit | Firefighter suit | Drybag | Combat Backpack (Tortilla) | Whellies | Raincoat | Most of the helmets. Best Water resistant gear: Gorka | USMC | OREL. Remember that you can always wring your clothes once you found shelter to try to remove the water in them. You'll reduce a wet state with each wring.

You can survive for a relatively long time without any kind of food after you spawn, but clean water is definetly the first thing you should be looking for within the first 20 minutes of gameplay. Experience will help you to identify the water pumps location within the cities. As an alternative, you can also just look for medication to be able to drink dirty water without their negative effects since ponds and rivers are everywhere. Remember to always keep your hands clean after drinking from a Water Pump. Using a container to collect and drink water from a Water Pump is a lot faster and efficient than just taking multiple sips. Just to give you a reference: You'll need more than 15 sips just to drink as much as the content inside a Canteen or Water Bottle, and it will take you way longer. Full Sip = 0,06L (60ml) - Canteen = 1L (1.000ml) - Water Bottle = 1L (1.000ml) - Cooking pot = 2L (2.000ml) - Jerrycan = 20L (20.000ml)

If you ever play on a Hardcore Server where food is even scarcer than in the vanilla experience, you'll realize that finding a knife is the difference between surviving and dying of hunger. A knife will allow you to survive the rain and the cold, be able to hunt and prepare your food, be able to build everything necessary for fishing, among other utilities. Along with finding a safe source of water, finding a knife is perhaps your second highest priority in the game when you are a freshspawn.

These are some of the more basic places to look for supplies (mainly food) at start. Always check the wrecked boats along the coast for canned food and sodas, the bus stations and the greenhouses. Experience will tell you where you should look first, avoiding having to check every single building.

Killing infecteds, killing other players, hunting large or small animals, fishing, harvest... there are many ways to get food in DayZ besides the basic looting methods. Make sure you know and take advantage of each and every one of them.

Izurvive Chernarus Map: izurvive.com/chernarusplus/ |  Izurvive Livonia Map: izurvive.com/livonia/ . This is probably the best online map that you will find on the game to help you around. If you can, even when its quite difficult, I highly recommend you trying to play without any outside tool. There is also an in-game map that you can loot around. Be aware that it will show you the terrain/locations and some markers but will not call out your specific location.

Greenhouses are a must check place when looking for food. They have almost exclusively food and seeds in their interior. You can find things like vegetables, cans of food and seeds that will help you to survive in the absence of better food sources.

Any Water Bottle, Cooking Pot or Canteen that you find will most likely have dirty water inside. Always empty them first to fill them back with pure water or clean its content by any of the two methods described in the picture. Note: Alcohol and Disinfectant spray don't seem to be working anymore for that since 1.08.

Explanation of how the Cholera acts, its consequences, how to avoid it and finally its treatment. Remember that you can also cure Cholera with Multivitamin pills at its early stages.

Sometimes, clean water sources or cooked/canned food are out of reach and all you have is some pond and uncooked steaks in your inventory. You can eat or drink those safely by taking the proper medication simultaneously. E.g: Consume a Tetracycline pill right before drinking from a pond to avoid getting Cholera. Consume a Charcoal tab before eating raw meat to avoid Salmonella. This will work with most of the toxic levels besides rotten food, burned food or Human Steaks/Fat/Guts. You cant mitigate their negative effects of Kuru and rotten/burned food is extremely toxic (Even 4 times more than raw food).

Remember that fruits have a good amount of water in them, but are not very efficient in providing energy (Kcal). This is just a last resource, but remember that you won´t be able to survive just by eating fruits. Memorizing the places where the fruit trees are will help you supplement your diet when you are a freshspawn.

Absolutely everything can be reused and nothing should be wasted. Even the animals guts can be consumed if you take the proper medication along with them. Pelts are probably the least useful element until a leather tanning system is finally applied (with the exception of Boar pelt that you can actually combine with a rope to craft an Improvised Fur Backpack).

Basic craftings recipies. Perhaps the most important of the list is the Hand Drill kit with which you can light fires and bonfires. This is probably one of the fundamental elements of survival in the absence of matches, lighter or even road flares. Just get bark from a big tree (you will need a knife for that) and combine it with a short stick (from bushes).

While useful, they are quite hard if you really don't take the time to follow the paths. Train tracks and trails are probaby the best place to find the small stones. Just in case, remember that you can always use a Pickaxe to get big stones out of boulders and then use it again to craft some small stones and finally a stone knife.

Some extra Tips that could help you find your way around the map. There is one in particular that even with +6K hours I still find it essential: Looking at the clouds that always move East. But its not that simple and there is something to consider: there are two kind of clouds in the sky, the ones are statics (big and volumetric ones) and the thinnest and almost imperceptible. This last ones are the ones moving. Look for those thin clouds that seems to be in 8 bits because those are the ones heading east.

Fishing is probably the most effective and OP way to get high quality food in DayZ. All you really need is a knife. You can even use human bones from a dead freshspawn in the coast to craft bone fishing hooks. Remember that the type of rod and the condition of the hook/bait will impact in the fishing probability.

To achieve quality interactions in DayZ there has to be a common goal, a reason, something that benefits or interests both. Otherwise KOS (Kill on sight) is almost inevitable because there's just no other advantage over killing you and taking all your stuff (or just to avoid having a bambi nearby in the same city). Always find a reason to interact and ask yourself why the other player might want to interact with you. If you find that there isn't one, then just make one up and start from there.

Secondary crafting recipes. Note 1: You can only craft the Fur Backpack with Boars pelt. It won´t work with any other animal pelt. Note 2: The Blood Bag will restore 500 blood units from a total of 5000. Note 3: The gas canisters have three different sizes: small, medium, large.

Be aware that the Wooden Crates have 45 (real life) days of persistence if you don´t bury them and only 14 days if you turn them into an underground stash. Since 1.08, you can even use the blue print system for precise positioning of the Wooden Crates and rotate them with the mouse wheel.

The different foods and its nutritional values. Note: The animal food values are the Baked ones, not the raw values. Remember that when you cook your food (Bake / Boil) you get +75% / +25% more nutritional value. The only exception of this rule is the Mackerel that have even more calories (800 kcal) when you eat it raw, but of course it has a toxicity level like any other raw food.

Basic guide about the diseases and how to treat/cure them. Be aware that the icons I used on the left side are only illustrations. In-game you will always have the same bacteria icon for any disease, so you'll have to identify the disease according to what you've done in the game.

Why my character is bleeding every 2 minutes?. Probably this is the reason behind that. Boots have a wear and tear mechanism that can break them. You won´t bleed from your feet unless they became ruined and then you will have a big problem. Make sure to always check their condition.

Probably the best advice in relation to killing infecteds is this: Try not to them, just lock them inside houses. They are pretty dumb and will follow you anywhere so just make them aggro you and run inside a big house. Then close the doors on your way out. It's the safest and most effective way to get rid of multiple infecteds. Remember, unless is unavoidable, never shoot the infecteds. That'll only draw more and more. Always kill them by using a melee weapon one by one. It's a silent and effective method of getting rid of them.

These hiking trails are not only useful for orientation but also because on your way you will find small hunter's tables that have very good survival elements (compasses, purification tabs, knives, binoculars...). You will also find big map signs with the "you are here" marker that will tell you exactly where you are.

Although it is quite intuitive, it is not usually used, but the power lines will lead you quite directly to the big urban centers. In Livonia (DLC map) this is especially useful. I think we all learned the route from Cherno to Zeleno through by following the power lines when we started playing DayZ.

It is a common mistake to see new players feeding themselves right after hunting a chicken or any other animal without washing their hands first. This will make you sick every time. Keep your hands clean, use gloves and remember that if you use them on dirty hands, this won't keep you from getting sick.

Blood compatibility table. Hemolytic Reaction: In case someone gets an incompatible blood transfusion, the recipient will faint almost instantly and his blood level will decrease for a few minutes, which may cause death. Use the Blood Test Kits that you can find in hospitals to test your own blood or even the blood bags.

Introduced in 1.08, you can´t light up fireplaces in houses with a celling height that is below 5 meters. Thats why you should always try to use the indoors fireplaces or, if you have your base in some building, use a firebarrel to cook.

Note 1: Be careful because with 1.08, the items that you place inside the fireplace inventory will now disappear as they burn. You need to boil or bake the items that you will use as a heat source by using one of the availables cooking methods. Worms and tomatoes are still the best items to do this. Note 2: Remember that the heat will only be transferred to your body if the hot item is in your jacket or pants, not in your backpack or vest.

This shows you the different cooking methods when your container has or does not have water. In the case of the frying pan, the use of fat its a must to avoid burning the food. Extra tip: Never run out of fat, always leave a little bit. It will serve you for future cooking. Note: Drying food still does not seem to be working properly in 1.08.

The different cooking methods with the new additions of Indoors Stoves and direct placing food in grills/stone introduced by 1.08. Using an in-door fireplace grill along with a long wooden stick is definetly the best option IMO. Remember that placing the food directly into the fire is the cooking method that takes the most amount of time.

Just drop the rag, bandages or piece of bark in the ground and with some matches, handrill, roadflare in your hands, light it up. You can then add more items for a longer combustion. This has personally helped me many times to quickly cook something and avoid dying of hunger.

My best advice is not to zoom into the night sky when looking for the Big Dipper. It's much easier to find it simply by looking at it with the regular view. Remember that Polaris (Northern Star) is just another star in the sky in the sense that is not bigger, brighter or different than the rest.

Once again, always empty the containers that you may find around to avoid getting cholera. You can also check if they have Gasoline or Water inside just by inspecting them with the middle mouse button.

Loot every building, shed, garage or vehicle in a certain area (Military/Medical). The loot distribution is not only related to the building type but sometimes also with the area. Thats why, if you are looking for medical equipment do not limit yourself to the hospital/clinic building, also check the surroundings. Same if you are inside a military base for example, you may find quality military loot inside a garage or a shed close by.

There is a certain value in some melee weapons called "animal multiplier". This means that if you hit an animal with any of this 4 tools (Axe, Fireaxe, Pickaxe, Nailed Bat), the damage will be higher than with the rest of the melee. This is extremely useful to avoid them (animals) from running away after the first blow. Note: Deers and Boars are probably the most difficult animales to hunt since they run pretty fast after they notice your presence. Avoid them if you don´t have something to shoot them with.

Another extremely important fact that will help you survive mainly on Hardcore Servers is that the animals always spawn in the same areas/locations and don't respawn (once dead) until the server restarts. Be sure to memorize those particular areas and be vigilant because it can be the difference between starving and being able to feed an army.

Using the grill of an indoor fireplace takes a lot of time and its probably the slowest cooking method. You can speed up the process by using containers (Pots/Pans) or by combining that action with a long wooden stick.

The efficiency of horticulture in DayZ is questionable. Mainly because, although it is a quick process, the nutrients the veggies offer in return do not always justify the task. As mentioned above, fruits and vegetables are abundant in water but very poor in nutritional value (Even after cooking them), so they are hardly the ideal way for feeding. Note: Remember that, after the first harvest, no more food will grow in the same plant. There's no such thing as a second crop cycle. You need to pull out the plant material and sow new seeds again.

In case you still want to try horticulture in DayZ, remember that you can use rain as a way to hydrate your crops. There is no difference in the time or speed of the growings due the water source, but it will save you a lot of time if you have a big plantation.

Knifes, nails, purification tables and even ammo can be found inside this little wooden toilets. I can't count the amount of Steak Knifes I've found in them and, as we know, a knife is really all we need in DayZ to survive. Never pass them without checking.

There is no Alpha in the pack that you can kill. This is just a myth. Kill 3 wolves of a pack and the rest will run away. After Bears and Ghilies, wolves are the most dangerous predators in the Chernarus forests. The stone oven is the best cooking method if you have large amounts of food since you can place 3 containers (Pans/Pot) on the rocks. You can even use them as a good improvised storage method when they're not on because of their 7-day persistence.

There are some exceptions to this rule in certain locations, but in general, if you are extremely far away from a city or military base and you see multiple infecteds around, there's a huge chance that a player is in that city or has been there recently. Use this information to your advantage. Extra Tip: another thing that will give you useful information about the possible presence of other players in a certain area / city are the doors of the buildings. Generally, most doors are closed by default after a server restart. In case you see open doors this means that someone has already been there.

If you play as a Marksman, Epipens should probably be one of your main tools. Since you can have unlimited stamina for a minute, you can also hold your breath for a whole minute when aiming to your target. This will give more precision and time to take the shoot. You can also inject an epi when chasing or running away from your enemy to benefit from the stamina boost.

To slide down ladders, just hold "SHIFT" while you hodling "S" (default back/down) and remember that your gloves will get damaged pretty fast while doing this. Note: When climbing a very tall tower, make sure you always exit with the action key (default F) when you reach the top and not just press W until the character comes out on his own. This will prevent possible accidents.

Just give this a try. When you hear a shot in the distance, quickly move the camera with the free look (default left ALT) to one side and you'll see how you can perfectly identify the direction of the shot because of this. Remember that a gunshot sounds are audible up to 3.5 km in DayZ.

A good way to implement it is in your keyboard is by binding the middle mause button to enter directly to the iron sight of your weapon and then use SHIFT as the default input to enter ADS. You can always swap between Iron Sight and the Scope by scrolling down/up with the mause wheel.

Some of us here will remember the time where the bullets where the ones that get ruined. Those times are gone. Now, it is not the bullet that cause the guns to jam but the condition of the Weapon or the magazine. Always repair them by using the appropriate tool (Weapon Cleaning Kit or Duct Tape).

One of the elements that needs to be polished in depth in my opinion is the weapon collision. To avoid frustrating scenarios always remember that the length of your weapon and specially the suppresors are decisive when doing pvp in closed spaces. Remove the suppresors or use some short SMG instead.

Restoring your blood levels in DayZ when you're healthy is a fairly quick process, so it's worth taking some of your own blood when you start to use it later when you actually need it.

If possible, hit your hostage in the legs or arms to do as little damage as possible and at the same time restart the struggle free action. Note that the other player can log out while being tied up, but they will die by doing so.

Paradoxically, wrecked vehicles are not a good place to look for vehicle parts besides wheels, but ADA´s seems to have the best loot among all of the wrecked vehicles (Mags, food, ammo, pistols).

You can have mutiple players bandaging you at the same. This is quite useful when you have multiple cuts (+3) and you'll just pass out before you can close the last wound from the massive blood loss.

The presence of players close to the dead bodies can alter their countdown times (Despawn times). Usually the body will disappear completely within 30 minutes. Weapons, backpacks and clothes have longer life times so always throw your partner's belongings on the ground in case he wants to go back to his body to get them. His body will probably disappear, but his belongings will still be there.

Long Wooden Sticks are definetly the best option to disarm a Bear Trap. Just put on in your hands and aim to the trap. You can get them even without a knife and just by using your bare hands in a big bush.

Remember that you not only get Kuru by eating human steaks. Human fat and guts will also make you get the disease. It does not matters if those are cooked or raw. Once you have Kuru, there is no way out but suicide or learn to live with the madness. The most negative aspect of the disease are the probably the random shakes that will prevent you from being able to have a steady pulse while aiming your weapon. Extra Tip: Its quite easy to confuse Human Fat with animal Fat because both have the same model, but there is a way. Always check the quantity bar under the Fat. If it's full or almost full, then it's definitely Human Fat.

Never leave a Military Base without having checked every one of its Military Towers. They're definitely worth the risk. I've found more than one NVG in these towers.

Don't ever drag items into your inventory and sort them out on the killing spot. Always grab them by double clicking, making sure you have enough room in your clothes, backpack or hands. Remember that you can´t wear ruined clothes unless they were in your body when they became ruined (someone shooted you for example). If you take them out, you won´t be able to put it wear them back again.

Use this feature whenever you use the radio to communicate with other survivors. The default in-game voice range is heard from a fairly wide distance, giving away your position.

If you are fast enough, you can re-pin the grenade once you drop it to the ground. But you will have already lost a few seconds. You can also place the grenades on campfires or stoves so that they explode automatically when they get ruined.

Dropping a radio on the floor will make it possible for everyone around you to hear it. On the other hand, If you just hold it in your hand, only you will be able to hear the conversation. If the transmitter is loud enough, this method can have excellent results as a bait.

Unfortunately, all ties methods can be broken by force, even Handcuffs. However, you can get them back (Without them being ruined) by using a handcuff key or a lockpick. Wires and handcuffs are the strongest and fastests methods for tying players.

It uses a 9V battery to turn on the Megaphone. Once it's on, you have to keep the left click to to raise it and put it in your mouth.

You will be able to recognize every time you make this "lethal blow" by the particular sound that the hit will make and the consequent fall animation of the infected. This attack doesn't work against other players and is limited to certain items.

Bandages are by far the best method to cure your cuts because of their efficiency, size and - short - duration of the animation. Regarding the Sewing kit, in 1.08 there is no such thing as wound infection, so you can safely sew up your wounds without having to pre-medicate.

Dying because of a player who got up from after being uncon because you just didn´t confirm the death is one of the first mistakes that new player makes in a pvp. Always double tap to confirm the kill or check the body position to avoid any surprises.

Three important things to keep in mind with cars: 1) Without enough water in the radiator or if you don't change gears in time, the engine will blow out and there is no way to repair it. 2) If you take the radiator out, all the water in it will be drained, forcing you to have to fill it up again. 3) The performance of the vehicles depends very much on the quality of the server (host). If you see that the car starts to bounce like crazy, simply put the engine in neutral and wait for it to stabilize before starting again.

You literally won't get hurt and it's an extremely effective way to save your life when there's an ambush or when the car starts bouncing like crazy from the instability of the server.

Check the small "energy" bar under each item to control the "charge" it has. You can reload the Torch several times with fat or gasoline. Long torch or short torch makes no difference in this respect.

An item that may seem extremely irrelevant but has a huge repair capability that will be very important in future versions of the game. Make sure you take advantage of it.
