There should be a tutorial level for DayZ

Recommended Posts

If you've ever played Mini DayZ (the single player 2D mobile version of DayZ), you'll know that it has a tutorial level in the beginning of the game where you repair a boat while learning the game's systems and mechanics and it ends with some bandits can coming up to you when the job is done and shooting you. I think something similar to this would make the transition into playing DayZ a lot more pleasant

Now this of course makes sense. If you have no friend to help you out, and even if you do, beginnings are very hard. On the other hand, knowing what to do does not make you safe or ensure your survival. Day Z has a steep learning curve that you will have to experience for yourself in order to understand things in the game. Lot of the stuff you do is intuitive, because it tries to simulate reality.

Thus I would still argue that the best tutorial is trial and error. You can always do reading on your own. Day Z wiki has tons of useful information which you can read in-between playing and at the same time in game experiment with your character. Big element still is navigating the map and no one will really teach you that, you have to do that on your own. This is again something that is both intuitive and can't really be tough because you need to familiarize yourself with the surrounding. There is no greater joy than recognizing some area because you've been there previously.

Recently they added a help section and some queues during loading, which will explain the basics. However; to flash out a fully comprehensive tutorial is probably even impossible. They cannot hand hold you and take you to each place on the map, neither can they explain to you absolutely everything, show you everything you can craft and so on. Practically 99% of the game you have to discover for yourself regardless. The game was designed to encourage exploration and discovery and it does so very well. Enough tutorials and self-learning exists already to get you started, beyond that this game requires time and attention. That learning curve is what makes the game what it is.
