oleg86@msn.com 101 Posted July 5, 2012 with all the spawn points and locations and what not?For a new player like me, using a map like that would take away a big part of DayZ experience.
Mastiff (DayZ) 42 Posted July 5, 2012 Give it time son, give it time... You will want it. I used it almost immediately, I've owned Arma 2 for nearly 2 years but never really played it so I don't know the map well at all anyway. First time I played I ended up running south west... I followed the rail line till it ended... and thought odd... so I ran north west from there and shortly after I was in what appeared to be the debug forest... so I killed myself and started playing with the map. The item spawn map to me helps weed out those useless houses, there are so many of them in towns that it gets annoying for those who don't recognise which buildings are enter able and which aren't. I used it initially to familiarise myself with those useful buildings. Now I have my own map and watch in game I can navigate pretty easily and I already know what appearance a building that might have stuff in looks like. kid18120 0 Posted July 5, 2012 I usually don't use external maps since i know the Chernarus area pretty well after many years of patrols gameplay, dominations and such. The only time i use it is to just have a quick look at the surroundings of my position if im in a place i can't remember that good as others!Note: Never used an interactive map (those with loot places icons etc.)
RPlasticPirate (RP) 4 Posted July 5, 2012 Give it time son' date=' give it time... You will want it. ....[/quote']^^ What the man said.I'm a Rocket science engineer who played EvE for years back when its new player experience was rough and I still thought the new player experience here is STEEP unless you know people that can help you. Since you don't start with a gun anymore and people are less trusty these days its only getting worse :DAlso as a former soldier maps are really neat - pretty much all you need and to know the buildings to look for. The Jman 0 Posted July 5, 2012 Personally i had an external map in the beginning but now i find myself being able to remember where everything is and i think it helped me to get a better view and path of the map. both me and my friend work well now even without an external map. Elias (DayZ) 57 Posted July 5, 2012 I agree that an external 'loot' map would take away some of the experience. I don't use 'm either. But I think that everyone should decide for himself, there is no moral judgement here.I do have a big printed map, but there are no spawnlocations or lootlocations etc on it. I use a pen to add my own findings about Chernarus to this map, adding new information when I find something ingame. That's what I would do in real life. It makes me feel like a real survivor. JustThatEpic 72 Posted July 5, 2012 I don't use it for looting buildings. Loot is loot, I'll take anything useful. I've only used it to find my way to Zeleno and to some other places.
Hinaru 96 Posted July 5, 2012 If you're not a guy, which buyed Arma 2 OA just for DayZ, you should know the map without a real map *giggle*. (:We're survivors, and we have to find maps or just use your senses to survive and navigate. A external map is a No Go for me.
Zso Sahal 2 Posted July 5, 2012 I'll be honest, I've used external maps before, however as time passes, I've been relying more and more on the ingame map. Mainly b/c its more immersive, and, especially once you find a gps, is quite easy once you learn the area. That said, I still will pull up an out of game map (usually the ingame one w/out being all marked up) and plan my next trip while making food IRL =P
chrispow 3 Posted July 5, 2012 You're doing well in avoiding the external map. You will get many more hours out of the game. I use the external and I know most of the map too. I am so flipping bored.
herd 69 Posted July 5, 2012 NOT using that map would take away a big part of DayZ experience.
chrispow 3 Posted July 6, 2012 NOT using that map would take away a big part of DayZ experience.???Explain.It depends on how you want to play the game. Do you want to play the survival horror that is Dayz or do you want to play the Gear-gathering MMOFPS that is Dayz? If the former: I don't see how avoiding use of an external map takes away from the experience.
Assentti 0 Posted July 6, 2012 Using the in-game map is actually a bit unrealistic and stupid, I think. You can't look around while looking at the map, instead you have to switch back and forth between the map and the view around you, leaving you helpless while looking at the map. As if the map would be the only thing you can see in real life. And besides, you can't zoom in real maps. I don't use interactive maps or any fancy stuff like that either, I just have a picture of the Chernarus map where I've drawn the locations of deer stands which I frequent. Alexey Zemanov 6 Posted July 6, 2012 Am I the only one who not using external mapwith all the spawn points and locations and what not?No, not only you. The nabs don't use it either.
_Profile_Shame 37 Posted July 6, 2012 not using an external map is a major enhancer for immersion (especially if you dont know the map) but it become necessary when you have an inpatient friend wanting to meet up
