can anyone tell me why I am unable to place a tent or barrel ? Left click for barrel does nothing at all so I have to dump it on the ground! Will it save?.  Tent will let me left click and bring up ghost image  but not actually place it, am I missing a key bind, do I need a hammer or hatchet to place it? is it a bug?  This  becomes a bit pointless if I have no way to store gear!

Would I be right in thinking that tents can go on level flat ground then? What about a stash? Drop item and start digging next to it? all that I get from that is worms!

You don't need a tool to place it. You should hold left button to place it, just like man said in previous post, but also you have to find appropriate place. e.g. :

If this place isn't appropriate you'll see tent's shape as good as in bad place, but it will be not so white and more transparent.
Also if place appropriate you'll see two tips to your actions, for pressing left button and holding it, if place isn't appropriate you'll see only one tip.
