Alternate ways to fill canteens?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I just had a few thoughts about this.

Say you're in the wilderness, in that secret little spot you hide your tents or vehicles so no one can find them. The nearest town is a few kilometers away, the nearest pond is even further, and you just emptied your last canteen. If this were the real world, would you run two kilometers to a town filled with horrible flesheating monsters and bloodthirsty gunslingers, just to put some water in your little plastic bottle?

I wouldn't.

A few alternatives that could be contemplated:

-Catching rainwater.

If one were to put up a funnel and an empty canteen in an open field, you would gradually fill it with rainwater if it rained. It wouldn't be instantaneous like filling from a pump or pond, but you wouldn't need to go anywhere special to do it. Just make sure your rig has a clear view to the sky, and the next time the server has a rainstorm, it would start to fill up. It would work a lot like a tent, in that you would have to check on it regularly, and other players could walk off with it if you didn't.

- Boiling/evaporating seawater.

As we know, it's bad to drink seawater. It dehydrates you and gives you all sorts of problems. But if you've ever done any studying of survival techniques, you'd know you can separate the H20 from everything else. By boiling seawater, or just leaving it out in the sun, you cause the water to turn into vapor and drift away from the now-crystallized salt and contaminants. If you put a plastic sheet or something similar over it, that will cause the water to recondense as pure, drinkable water. You'd have to have access to seawater, but that's somewhat common in the nation of Chernarus, isn't it?

I've checked the forum history, and I haven't seen these debated in any extensive discussion, and I don't think it falls in any of the typical "taboo" subjects. It's up to the community to determine whether or not the idea has enough value to be considered.

this seems like a pretty neat idea, but could take away the urgency of going into towns and around the map, i know food is still factored in, but do we want people being able to solely live in a forest and survive without raiding a town everday?, might make the game a little less fun pvp wise

but still a good idea non the less

On a side note, how about add the ability to drink directly from the well spouts around farms and in certain small towns

My only question is, what's the incentive there? I feel like although people try to emphasize how realistic and simulation-like this game should be, we all know that at its core, Day Z is a video game, and I don't think people sitting in a campsite for days on end is all that likely. After all, people still go to airfields and things like that all the time, even though all real-world logic tells them not to.

I believe they're already working on that.

Actually I think it would be kind of cool if we had to boil the water collected from ponds. Well, we don't HAVE to do it but, there is a possibility of infection.

The whole distillation/funnelparachuteraingatherer sounds a little difficult to do (in programming/developing kind of context), and one wouldn't have to go anywhere to find a drink, and like you said, OP, not many would camp in a forest for days :D

But how about that? Normal canteen lasts, when filled, one use when it should be two in my opinion. And I think that being able to fill your canteen in any mucky yucky dirty green-brown pond you find is a bit, well, easy. Let's say that you can only fill your canteen in a well/water pump you find in town.

But, with the LifeSaver©®(ETC), you could fill it with seawater, mucky pond water and other dirty/celan water sources? It would be rarer than the water canteen. And yes, I think you are able to pee in it in real life...? (insert Bear Grylls face here)

THOUGHTS?!?++1
