As the title say's what makes you kill? After reading a post concerning the nature of humans and there interactions with each other concerning mainly the choice and drive to kill and the implications that such an action would incur in a post apocalyptic wasteland it got me thinking why do i kill others? what was my main motivation for blasting another player? What effects if any should be implemented to add consequence to killing?

this is mainly a thread that will aim to discuss the logic and reasoning behind why we kill or not in the game in relation to the post (or not in relation if you didnt bother reading it feel free to post ahead anyway i would recommend reading it though) i linked and how we feel that some sort of negative effect should occur when you kill another in a pitiless and "pointless" way way rather than self defense (if thats even possible in the engine) .

I suppose it could be about protecting my recently found m9 sd and Ghillie suit for example, after obtaining this valuable booty i was not keen on loosing it and when a man with a silenced m9 walks up the stairs my first instinct is to protect the gear i got by way of killing. So what was it that made me worried that my gear was in danger? what were the underlying facts that decided whether i had time to asses the situation?:

1 the man had a gun and i heard him shoot as well (seems he missed PHEW!)

2 Communication can be difficult at times if you don't have a mic i hardly have the time to type "friendly" infact i dont have time if the other party is intent on killing me which is unknown and is pointing a gun at me.

3 there wernt any consequences for this action infact much needed items were accrued.

4 It seems most people are hostile. However the lack of weapons to begin with stops the coast killing but that is where i learn that most people would rather gun you down than help perhaps my outlook on the DayZ community that ive experienced has given me a slant towards Shoot First ask questions later (but if after that first skirmish is over and were still both alive Im happy to talk since we both have time because where not distracted by the barrel of a gun).

Thats one expample of why i kill in this game rather than cooperate (unless i can see the guy dosnt have a weapon i general dont shoot unless im feeling particularly like playing a shooter. i think its a credit to the game, i can play it how I want not how it is dictated to me and it is after all a game and we will never act completely realisticly).

So in the above situation the motivation and reasons seem to be simply Survival and protection of treasure. That however is not always the case there have been times when ive had a sniper and shot some poor fool walking along. the motivating factor here was the fun of killing and trying out my new weapon which if you've read the linked post is perhaps quite illogical and thats true in a post apocalyptic world humans would most likely prefer to gain a companion than the pointless murder of another on there conscious. Well mostly..... Whilst i do believe there should be some sort of discernable effects for the ruthless killing of another for no reason, i don't think it should be anything that hinders the players to any extreme level. As for what these "effects" should entail or if you want them to exist at all is up to the opinions of the community. this is what i think on the matter:

You shouldnt really be hit with hammer of death just because you strike another down in a game that has:

guns that give the means to an end, the promise of reward for actions good or bad that facilitate ones survival , The simple promise of reward for the simple reason of greed and betterment in loots, fear, paranoia ,the urge to survive for whatever reason and that is after all a sandbox game designed to provide a technically accurate median for an apocalyptic survival game that's intended to entertain and challenge the player at what ever activity they choose to partake in this diverse challenging and huge world and lets be honest we wouldnt play it if we didnt like a challenge however small it may be :P.

For me what makes this game great is the freedom of choice there are no RESTRICTIVE laws or rules (except natural laws such the need to eat fall damage and what not) that restrict my game play and role playing capabilities as a post apocalyptic survivor or bandit. The laws that do exist do so to augment the game play and achieve more realism.

This high level of realism aids immersion and contributes to making it such a fun game where i cant just burst off a roof shoot 15 people whilst falling whilst knifing the person i jumped off the roof to kill. this may be fun and still even a good concept for a game but not realistic and not the way the game needs to go nor the feeling its trying to achieve and IMO it has achieved alot so far. ( ill get to what i feel it has achieved). The game should not cater towards the group who would want, for lack of a better term a hellokittyislanadventure MMO. In fact i feel the game does not need to go one way another, nor should it Dayz should stay true to one of its most defining attributes: REALISM. Realism was what made me buy arma 2 just for dayz. it has achieved a high level of realism in a conceptual world which act as the nonrestrictive yet defining and guiding "laws" which govern many of the players actions in this game.

Which is why i believe (I finnaly GOT TO THE POINT!) there should be no attempt to stop players killing one another or limiting the players choice such as pvp tags which make things very black and white and frankly unrealistic the world is never black and white. So a subtle show that the player is a Murderer (not some 1 who killed in self defense, shot at first) like heavy breath around players (representing guilt agitation or somthing maybe just an idea) or perhaps evil darting eyes :dodgy: as for effects on the player who murdered perhaps the player could tremble slightly when aiming at a player for a certain amount of time or perhaps until they perform a helpful deed (bandaging bloodpacks or merely staying close to other players for a time without your gun killing them Etc). this could represent the horror of killing and the survivors reluctance to kill another again after experiencing it. (if the engine would support it). this would make it more difficult to kill others but not impossible whilst still maintaining a noticeable consequence for killing another which adds to realism which makes the game what it is and i my opinion is all the richer for it.

OR IS IT RICHER FOR IT?

well thats my idea on the matter i didnt expect to write so much but i hope its insightful and hope to see other interesting responses Share this forum with your friends and mutual beneficiary's

If I don't have a backpack I'll kill for an Alice. if someone has a tripped out weapon and ghillie sitting in the forest they are dead so that they don't hurt anyone else.

I kill if he got something that i want. Simple as that.

Maybe sometimes i kill someone to be sure he can't kill me.

But everytime i shout "FRIENDLY?" if they don't respond, i kill them, if they do respond with "FRIENDLY" i do not.

i tend not to kill people, and yes this does lead to me to countless deaths and my friends think its stupid and i should just shoot but for me its my morals that stop me, i wont sink so low as to shoot someone simply becuase they have something i want or because i can.

I would rather co-operate and get them to make me a fire and then cook my meat then kill them and take the matches and i get much more enjoyment out of this encounters as your still paranoid and worried about what will happen but its not a simple shoot on sight as this makes Dayz boring. I think Bandits make Dayz scary and interesting but Survivors make the game fun, if you know what im getting at? i just like to die with a good heart.

Il kill if i randomly run into a guy without warning. I will NEVER kill a guy just because he has something thet i dont. I will NEVER shoot someone who is unarmed. I will NEVER shoot someone that has declared friendly. Anyone in a guillie/camo skin i shoot on sight as 9/10 they are bandits.

If I really need food or water, I will kill someone... same goes for morphine injector, blood bags, painkillers... I don't always kill them, I sometimes force them to give me it and leave them alone :P

I have yet to kill anyone though i have been killed myself 5-6 times. If i see a player i will avoid or shout "Friendly" if no response i quickly get outta there. The times i have been killed have been cowardly sniper shots or a couple of cat and mouse fights (which i actually enjoyed)

In the past i just couldnt bring myself to shoot someone in cold blood - what was the point? Beans, weapons, a hard on? I'd rather find stuff myself.

Now however i am going to alternate my play every respawn- Survivor, bandit, mental headcase!

I haven't been shooting people, except once. After being killed a number of times, for no reason whatsoever, often with nothing but starting equipment, I will probably start shooting people on sight.
