DayZ Beta - Cannot use rags

I noticed that DayZ had moved out of early access alpha and moved to beta, so decided to play the game again. I enjoyed my expereience until I took damage and started to bleed. I thought, that's simple I've got some rags to banage myself with. However, there is no way for me to use the bandage. Am I being stupid or is the bandage not working?

Put bandage in hands. Get out of the inventory and in the bottom left corner you'll see "instructions" for whatever you holding in your hands. In this case hold the left mouse button.

i got injured today (new player 1 day in) and also could not find away to use the rags which were in my hands, the only instruction i had when i left pressed the mouse was remove gag?? i ended up bleeding to death which was made more frustrating because i had just found a bloody rifle.
