"Modified Data" repeatedly kicking me out of servers? Any solutions?

Today I've been experiencing what appears to be some serious server de-sync every 2-3 minutes, followed by a kick. During the desync zombies freeze, I can't open doors, interact with or pick up any objects and animations don't complete. 
When the desync subsides, if I'm still in the server, some people will be kicked from the game. More often than not, however, the desync does not subside and I'll be kicked from the server and given a Modified Data message.

The game is totally unplayable in this state, I can't even be in a server for more than 5-10 minutes. Anyone else getting this?

playing on servers with 39-70ish ping btw. also already verified on steam data, restarted steam, no fix.
