I'm sure you've noticed that the grenade did what grenades do in this game and just randomly hit air and got flung backwards and probably dropped right at the doorway or very close to it... Not sure if that's what you were talking about or just the fact that the guy survived at all to kill your wingman. 

Still a bit hesitant to use any type of grenade- other than smokes. The smokes actually don't look too bad.
