How to communicate?

Being a new arma/day z player, I'm finding it very difficult to communicate with others via the ingame chat system. If I'm not mistaken, I have to switch the channel to direct, and press / to chat right? However, no one seems to respond, I'm starting to think the / command is to prompt up the command console rather then an inbox to chat ingame. Aside from using mics in skype and what not, is there any other way to communicate with fellow survivors?

If your going in to this game mic less and solo. Don't expect much as far as communication. Odds are they have friend on vent etc. that they're talking to. If your trying to mic talk to a stranger in Arma more than most likely they will just harass you, or tell you to shut up.

But it does sound like your doing in game text chat correctly. That is how I text chat. Being that it took almost 8 hours for me to respond to your question others in game are most likely busy aswell. Hard to text chat when your surviving. Or they're just quite.

If your in "side channel", the "main channel" chatter wont show for you. Vis versa. As for other ways to communicate maybe you can work out some hand signals or something :P Here is the only thing I can think of. Find/enroll for a group?

Everything is extremely buggy when it comes to communication. Communication is very strict in this game.

Server chat is usually screwed up and the other player won't receive the message.

Direct communication voice chat is stupid. Don't ever speak in it unless you're approaching a stranger that you wanna confront, knowing very well that you might get exposed and die doing so.

direct channel has a range of 80 meters for voice and 40 meters for text

global channels have been removed in 1.7.0 I believe but some servers got them re-enabled

if you want a global channel to help you learn the game I suggest you find such server.. I prefer servers with global channels disabled

Thanks for the reply guys! Thought the chat system didn't work at all since no one ever responded to me. Defo going to join a group/clan or find some trustworthy people to band up with.
