Expandind the Map Size?

Just curious if there is a plan or ambition to expand the map? Seems like there is some really interesting mountain terrain out west after the map ends.

Also, I'd like to know if persistence works outside the map area? I've tried digging garden plots outside the map, and that works. So, would it be possible to set up a little tent base way out beyond sight over the horizon or something?
