Survival Suggestions

Recommended Posts

Series of survival suggestions here. Starting with:

Solar Still:

A solar still is an improvised method of generating water in a survival scenario. It is built first by digging a pit in open sunlight (use shovel, farming hoe or a pick) and filling it with lush green foliage (green leaves and grass could be used) and placing an empty water container inside to collect water (bottle, canteen or empty can.) A plastic sheet (a say 1x2 item) is placed over the pit and a small weight (stone, knife, magazine etc) added to the sheet above the container. Over time (for gameplay purposes say 5 minutes) the water inside the leaves and grass evaporates from the heat and will collect in the container which can later be consumed and reused, without needing purification. Nice camp improvement you could build, or build on the go if you can't find water.

Using Glass Lens To Start Fire:

Simple. Build a fireplace in the sunlight, place a rifle scope with magnification (PU, ACOG, PSO1, LRS, Hunting etc) in your hands (or magnifying glass) and use focused sunlight to start a fire instead of matches.

Gun Trap:

Simple trap designed to warn and ward off intruders. Requires rope, sticks , and a loaded gun. A pile of sticks with rope are used to build up a gunrack, with the gun facing a desired direction. Another lot of sticks are used with rope and rope is run between as a trip wire. Anyone who touches the rope (the sticks must be within 5m apart to anchor) will pull the trigger which the rope is tied to and the gun will fire one shot (or successive shots if it's fully automatic with a magazine and the victim stands near the rope without moving) in the direction of the victim. Flare guns will fire a flare into the air which can be used to warn of the player's presence for others. Grenades may also be used and will unpin the grenade if activated, which explodes shortly afterwards.

Smoke Signals:

Fairly simple. Put green foliage/grass into a fireplace and set it alight. It will generate a large amount of smoke/steam rising into the air as a signal to survivors for 30 seconds.

Live Bait:

Live bait is a way to draw predators (wolves, foxes, bears, zombies etc) to a killing field where they can be successfully hunted. It requires rope, sticks, a knife, and live prey (handcuffed survivor, goat, rabbit or lamb.) First the survivor is caught and handcuffed, or animal caught alive with rope. Whilst handcuffed the knife is used to cause an incision, with the blood smeared and the panicked cries of pain left audible. The scent and panic will cause all predators within 1.5km to come investigate and begin attacking the sacrifice where they can be killed.

Rabbit Whistle:

Similar concept but less sadistic. Place whistle in your hands and blow to make a rabbit in distress sound. All predators within 1.5km will converge and attack you.

Heat Beads:

A bag of heat beads when poured into a fire cause it to burn until the server restarts. Pretty simple.

Foxhole:

Requires a shovel. Simply dig a foxhole into the ground (away from stones) with a shovel, facing the direction you want the firing port dug. A deep pit surrounded with a birm will be dug at adult human height in depth with a firing port to shoot through will be dug, the rear of the pit sloped to allow you to walk jn and out. Functions as a defensive position for campers. Netting and foliage/grass may be added to form a camo net to help conceal it, and the birm provides cover from incoming small arms fire.

Stash:

Requires netting, green/foliage and a shovel. Dig a stash in the ground and add the camo net to build a stash capable of holding a primary weapon with some extra slots for ammo (or simply add other equipment to hide inside.) Smaller alternative to tents.

Hope you like these, add your thoughts!

Although many may have been suggested I think alot of these are good ideas. I want a rabbit whistle since I still haven't seen one in game.

Thanks to DURRHUNTER for your insightful reply.

1) A solar still wouldn't really be necessary in a temperate deciduous forest, AKA where Day Z takes place. There is a LOT of fresh water available. Solar stills are more suited to deserts and the like. In its place, I propose something similar: a water filter, made from a soda bottle, sand, and charcoal. It would allow the player to treat water in order to make it potable, without the need for chemical tablets or fire. However, it would take a lot longer to fully pass through the filter, so you might want to make multiple filters.

2) I don't really know about the "gun trap". For the amount of effort it would take to set up, you could either 1) shoot them normally, or 2) make a trap that doesn't use a bullet.

3) Various animal lures. Meh. I know they are used in real life, but I prefer "scoot n' shoot" for survival-hunting, as it lets you forage for plant-food at the same time. Just my opinion

4) I have no idea what "heat beads" are.

5) Foxhole. Sure, although I think you underestimate just how much work it takes to dig a hole. Plus, I don't think the engine can support deformable terrain.

6) Yes, I want stashes. Much more realistic than storing gear in tents.

Improvised sewing kit:

Bones can be crafted into needles with a knife - guts and/or some other cordage can be made into string (perhaps require a barrel and lime to properly cure the string?), combine them and you have imrpov sewing kit.

Heat beads are commercially available coals, often used in barbeques. Its literally a bag of coal.
