I thought that was the common tactic and that locking yourself in would be "another" tactic. Locking yourself in may be easier to accomplish and you may be less likely to be hit. :) It does feel a little cheesed to hit the infected through the window with punches but shooting will work too, it just depends more on the window for shooting.
