"Missing question" during PAX East: Storytelling through Player Interaction

Recommended Posts

Hi folks!

I thought it would be interesting to hear other peoples thoughts on this discussion at PAX East, posted recently in the official section of the forum.

Personally, I do not follow streamers for DayZ anywhere, and I only currently follow 1 streamer on twitch, and I rarely watch DayZ youtube vids, so much of this was not terribly interesting to me with the exception of one (in my opinion) very obvious thing that was not discussed or was otherwise somehow overlooked....

....no one seemed to wonder aloud how the intrinsic changes to the game (very near implementation) will effect how they play and how the community at large plays.

Sure private servers, modded servers, separate shards, will all have custom settings to facilitate types of gameplay but the grand experience will be drastically altered by many upcoming changes. Correct me if I'm wrong but one major factor implemented properly (like when the infected numbers rise) will make playing the way many of the streamers play very difficult, if not near impossible.

The idea of all these people having to adjust to what are the "rules" (gameplay mechanics) of DayZ sort of fascinates me.

I know I'm personally looking forward to a very different experience.....

Thanks for thoughts/beans!

I am also looking forward to the upcoming shift in gameplay. I was a big fan of the risk-reward mechanic when using load weapons that came with the large numbers of zombies in the mod.

I look forward to seeing some more strategic and interesting videos as well as some strategies botched by zombies, or even enemies being forced to cooperate backstabbing each other when the zombies are cleared.

As the game progresses, strategy and game-play are certainly going to shift. I think it has to some degree already throughout the life of this project.

^Exactly.

Playing in wild ultra aggressive fashion will become extremely risky. Stealth, team work, and survival strategy will truly become more attractive ways to play.

I'm just amazed/tickled by the sort of bubble the PvP mil-RP set seem to live in.

Your DayZ of surviving without care are numbered...

Persistence, clans, and tents, will be enough to often sustain the murderers but the checks and balances (more zombies, and medical problems) will often hinder them and force them to adjust.

I think a lot of people will not enjoy DayZ when it becomes more difficult and less of a giant game of grab ass (like every other FPS).

I also hope we see a fix to 3rd person wall peeking.

I basically never play 3rd person for this reason alone (plus you get less KoS and bandits).

I'm a little worried I might not like the game as it gets more difficult. I suppose I might ease into it since it will be rolled out in iterations over time. Still if it becomes as annoying as I found the mod to be in regards to zombies coming at me every 2 minutes...I don't know.

However I understand the majority of players who came from the mod are looking forward to more difficulty and I hope they get what they want. :)

Streamers will indeed have to adjust their play styles as we all will and I'm sure it will still be enjoyable to watch them play(if not more so!).

At the end of the day they can make all the changes they want but most players adapt and it isn't actually difficult.  I think people are kidding themselves if they think this game is going to turn into massive zombie hordes with super scarce food and everyone's going to be running around searching for a single can of beans or whatever.

Usually as the game gets "harder" it's the "bandits" for lack of a better term that adapt the best, because generally speaking they've realized not to give a shit and will just kamakazi to get their kills if the game is too difficult.

To put it another way, the players who play like victims are always going to be victims.  And those players are the ones who complain about pvp and kos and sit around hoping the game is going to change enough to diminish it so they don't have to cope with it themselves.  Which is counter to the entire design philosophy of an open sandbox, where responsibility for yourself is exactly that, your own responsibility.  Those who understand that (which I'd say every one of those streamers/youtubers in that panel do, from what I've seen) are never going to have difficulty adapting.

I am hoping you are wrong but afraid you are right.

Survival works best if you eliminate the biggest threat.

And killing the biggest threat is not that hard, is it?
